Figura column: A crossbow is not a bow and arrow in this state (and readers respond)
As far as New York State is concerned, a crossbow is not a bow and arrow.
Under the new law that takes effect this fall, one can only be used as a  hunting implement during the regular deer/bear hunting seasons and the  muzzleloading season that follows — a period stretching from Nov. 19 to  Dec. 20.

Crossbows can’t be used during the preceding month, which is the  regular bowhunting season. During that time, hunters can use only long  (traditional) bows or compound bows, which have pulleys on both ends  that make it easier to draw the bow string back and hold it.

Some things never change!  I do feel the crossbow community in general is moving in the right direction. We will have our bumps in the road like New York & Wisconsin but we are still moving forward. Thanks for the article....

“Other than if someone had a disability, I can’t see why anyone would be interested in buying one,” he said.

I don't understand why in the heck people buy Starbucks Coffee either, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN I WANNA OUTLAW IT!!  People like this make me sick, little tyrants running around telling me what I should and shouldn't like and what I should and shouldn't buy.

I LOVE hunting with a crossbow, to date I have only taken one animal with one, but it was an instant addiction.  I immidately threw my compound vertical bow to the dogs and have committed to solely hunting with crossbow this year during archery season.  I realize not everyone is like me and thats fine, its just my personal preference.

Tell the Yo Yo in charge to look at the revenue that crossbows generate!! Maybe (with luck) he will pay attention to that??? Obviously they are in good health and have not had to use any thing but a bow.  Well when we get older times changes and our bodies unfortunately falls a part. It would be nice if they thought about the older crowd before they make silly decisions IMO!!

As a resident of NY, you can not believe the way a certain organization for bow hunters, has bashed the use of crossbows.  They have gone as far as calling them "crossguns" and have implied that hunters using crossbows will in some way shape or forum will "take away" from the "bow hunting experience" during the regular archery season.

I my self have had numerous surgeries on my arm, wrist, and shoulder. I can not use a standard bow any longer.

There has been so much BS, said and printed about the use of cross bows that you cold float a battleship on it.

THe last I heard, was the Legislature has approved the use of cross bows during the regular season, BUT, only by persons with a documented handicap or disability. It has been passed to the D.E.C. for there approval.

Here is a link to the Bill:

I tried to copy the Bill and paste it here, but would not work for some reason.

Sounds very familiar..MBH did the same thing here in MI., but in the long run facts win out over emotions...Band together and keep fighting, don't settle for nothing less than full inclusion for everybody...

Well, from talking to a bunch of folks here in NY, the general consensus is that crossbows should be allowed for all seasons.

But, the problem is that the one's that are against them have the time, money and lobbyists in Albany to ensure they get there way.  They even went so far as to stand outside of the D.E.C. meetings and protested the use of cross bows right along side the "anti-hunting" groups that were there.

And yet, this same group spouts the statement " We represent ALL bow hunters in NY"

I guess they are talking about ALL the bow hunters that want to follow the beliefs of the few that are in power at that organization.

That is EXACTLY where they belong locked arm & arm with the anti-hunting zelots. They are even worse than the PETA types. We all know where PETA stands these groups just stab all hunters in the back with this type of activity! New York & Wisconsin are the poster children for the "new wave anti hunter" organizations with their lawyers & lobbyist. They traded their camo for three piece suits and political favors!!

I live in CT where you can use a crossbow in the late January season and it's great. I also own land in Franklin NY and NY just passed a bill that will allow you to use a crossboww during the regular season but not any of the archery seaons. It's a slow step in the right direction but I believe we should have the choice to use a crossbow or bow during archery season.

The bottom line is that it is our choice as hunters to shoot or not no matter what we are using as long as we have practiced and are accurate.

Tks, STM.
