Just curious if anyone had ever tried wood chips to fill out a crossbow target? I'm not sure it would be dense enough to stop an arrow or not?
Maybe if I lined a box with burlap sacks then filled the inner part with chips? I know it would be heavy and tough to move if I wanted too, but it sure would be cheap to make. And I have and endless supply of chips.

I would have to say that it wouldn't stop an arrow very well. I guess if you could pack them tight enough it may work.

Well just had to run (hobble) outside and shoot a bag of wet mulch. The test was a failure as it passed strait through but the look on my wifes face as she was shaking her head was priceless.

Give it a try you have nothing to loose.

I was afraid of it passing thru Thats why I had to ask if anyone had tried it. I didnt mean for you to run out and give it a try but i'm glad you told me what happened. LOL
Now I know not to try that!
I hate it didnt work though, I have a couple tons of chips and could replace them as needed. I'll just make one with old cloths and get to shooting.
Thanks Tom

Not wood chips, but excelsior wood bales used to be very popular back in the 1970's compound boom. They did a great job stopping arrows from bows back then, and lasted several years. I haven't shot one since the 1980's, so I don't know how they would fare against the modern compound bows and crossbows.

They are made from long shavings of wood then bonded together in a bale, which would be very hard to do with the wood chips. Just thought you might want to read about them.

Havn't used wood but, judging form my experience with rubber nuggets (shreaded tires used for landscaping) can't imagine them doing the job. Rags work best of anything I've tried (plastic grocery sacks, expandible foam, styrafoam, carpeting)..
