The current legislation does not provide an extra tag for another dear, but it also doesn't cost require a special license so there's no additional cost. It only requires that you go online to the NYDEC website and review the safety regulations and print of the safety certificate for crossbows and carry it with you anytime your using the crossbow to hunt.

The New York DEC has control and governence for the hunting use of crossbows within the state. The reason it has not and may not be approved for use during the archery season is because New York Bowhunters Association campaigned vigorisly against permitting it. They are attempting to convince our legislators that a crossbow is not a bow and more closely related to a gun, so the DEC aligned its use with that of the gun season.

Crossbow owners need to communicate at every possible opportunitey to our govenor, legislators and the head of the NYDEC how mis-directed they were and that almost every other state in this country has aligned the crossbow with the archery season because the entire world and history has already defined the crossbow as an archery weapon and not as a gun.

It should have never been an issue of how it was catagorized, since that was done already. Now we need to petition vigorously if we want our DEC to fix the regulations and properly align the crossbows use.

I'll never understand why they care. How in the heck do crossbows affect them? If you don't want to hunt with a crossbow, then don't hunt with a crossbow. Why does it matter to you if others hunt with one?

Hi robertyb,
To answer your question about why they care about how the crossbow is catagorized and how it applies to them, please keep in mind that under the present NYDEC laws, they (NY Bowhunters Association), has both an entire archery only season dedicated to archers only and they have certain geographic areas (such as Westerchester County) and others that are set aside for Archery Hunting Only.  This means that unless you are hunting with a bow, you can't set foot into these prime areas.

They're not interested in sharing or giving up these great hunting areas or competing with other types of hunters when they've already had it to themselves for many years.

They are in business to fight for their members and their interests only and they've done an admiral job of retain those rights, which has been theirs alone for many decades.

They may be doing it dishonestly and leveraging untruthful information, but many hundreds of corporations and advertisers are no less guilty of the same practises in our country these years.

We as americans and as sportsmen and women need to counter these practises by bringing forward the truth, if want to change these things. We further need to fight for what we want, if we expect to achieve change. After all, we are the new kids on the block, so we shouldn't expect to have things just handed to us and we have no right to expect them to just role out a welcome wagon.

If we're not prepared to fight for an equal place along side them, we should be prepared to give up our right to expect anything better than what we've been given!

This organization have become a much louder voice in our states legislation, against our rights as archers and hunters than the anti-hunting activists, so we need to unite an use our collective strength by letting our legislators and the states DEC know that they are are misrepresenting the facts about crossbows. Our numbers and strengths are growing very quicly every year. We want the same laws and regualtions that most other states have already enacted for crossbow hunting. We have not asked for special seasons or special regualtions. We are after what is truthful and wrightfully ours!

It appears that NY is going the same route as Pa. did, Start with disabled permits only, then in reg. gun season then, in muzzle loader seasons, hopfully next step is archery season I only hope they learn from Pa's mistake and skip the sunset period, Here in Pa. we are now one vote away, this april, from full inclusion in reg. archery seasons. Keep fighting and be patient and NY can get crossbows in reg. archery seasons also. I wish you luck because I live in North Central Pa. and would love to hunt with a crossbow in your state. Now if Pa. will follow NY and allow Sunday hunting we will have equal seasons with you.

Hi Randy,
I'm lookinhg forward to the day when people like yourself can enjoy some of New Yorks hunting with a crossbow as well.

I live in New York, but my family and relatives are all from North Central PA, so that's where I began my hunting career as a teenager.

The mountains of Cambria County were once my parents homes.

Keep up the fight until the states put the politics aside and do the right thing!

I have written letters to:

NYDEC,
Governor Cuomo
Assemblyman Robert Sweeney
Senator Grizanti

Below is the E-mail I sent out. (Feel free to Paraphrase)

Sir,

Just a few words to let you know my feelings on crossbows.

I was very happy to see that NYS has finally allowed crossbow hunting within it's boundaries. I sincerely hope that the future of crossbow hunting will be extended beyond the 2012 season. I have spent quite a bit of money in the past few months so that I could hunt big game with a crossbow, I would hope that my money was well spent and not wasted on just two seasons.

My complaint is the crossbow should be allowed during bow hunting season so that we could have the same advantages as the traditional bow hunters.

The New York Bow Hunters Association worked very hard to provide the New York Government and the DEC with boatloads of false information. This was not done by accident, it was done with the sole intention of insuring that they would not have any competition when it came to the lands they hunt during the hunting seasons.

Crossbow hunters had no voice in this state due to the fact that we had no organizations or associations that could speak in our behalf.

I strongly urge you to continue the use of crossbows in NYS and to expand the use to other game animals. Many other states allow the use of crossbows for Ferrel hogs, turkey, woodchuck without dire effects on the game population or ruining the traditional bow hunters big game season.

In conclusion I would like to say, please don't let the New York Bow Hunters Association predigest or influence your decision when it comes time to vote on next years legislation on crossbows. Crossbow hunters deserve the same consideration as other hunters.

Thank You,

Rick (Last name withheld for privacy reasons) :zoro:

There is no doubt that hunting with a crossbow during shotgun season puts the crossbow hunter at a definite disadvantage. Please take a few minutes and send out an E-mail to the lawmakers of New York. We (crossbow hunters) really do need to put the pressure on our legislators if we expect them to make any changes.
Later,
Rick D.

Hi RICKD,
Nicely written letter.

The Govenor should get about 10,000 such letters and he should also be forced to see the type of additional revenue crossbow sales have produced on everything from Outdoor Sporting Equipment to additional Licensingby Hunters.   All of the above is good for the state!
