2011-12 Crossbow Nation Hunting Contest Rules

Start/Finish Dates:  The contest will start on September 15th, 2011 and finish on February 15th, 2012. (We realized that some seasons start and end earlier than these dates.  However, we tried to give everyone an ample amount of time, and at the same time tried to make it so nobody had an advantage too.)

Teams/Alternates:  Teams will be formed by September 14th. Teams will consist of 5 members each and will be drawn at random.  Total amount of teams will be determined by total amount of participants.  If there are not enough members to make a complete team, those remaining players will be on a standby/alternate list.  In the event a team loses a member for any reason, it will be assigned an alternate.  Alternate order will be determined by date the member registered for the contest with the earliest date registered first in line. IF A TEAM MEMBER QUITS FOR ANY REASON, OR A TEAM MEMBER IS TO BE REPLACED, A MEMBER FROM THE ALTERNATE LIST CAN BECOME A TEAM MEMBER; HOWEVER, ANY GAME TAKEN BY THE NEW MEMBER BEFORE BEING ON THE TEAM DOES NOT COUNT AND THE POINTS FROM THE OLD MEMBER WILL ALSO BE REMOVED. BY JOINING A TEAM YOU  AGREE TO ABIDE BY THE RULES AS POSTED FOR THE 2011-2012 CROSSBOW NATION TEAM HUNTING CONTEST

General Rules:  Because this is a crossbow site, this will be a crossbow contest.  No other weapons will be permitted.  Furthermore, you must take a picture with the animal, yourself, and your crossbow for entries to be valid.  If you can’t take a picture in the field, take one at the check-in station, gas station, or when you get back to camp, or home.  Every cell phone has a camera in it today, so no excuses.

Free Range/Preserves:  Amended 8/29/2011, Both free range animals and preserves/ high fence animals will be acceptable for  entry into the hunting contest.

Scoring/Point System:  Much consideration has been taken to try to give every member a fair opportunity to compete in the contest.  We realize that not every animal will be available to every member.  We also realized that certain animals are larger/more developed in certain parts of the country compared to other parts.  So again, this is the best we could come up with to take those variables out of the equation.

Each member will be able to enter their personal 5 best entries.  Lower scoring entries can be replaced by higher scoring ones, but still a maximum of 5 will be allowed.  If a member fails to enter 5 animals, they will get credit for all animals entered.

Here is a list of the eligible animals, and there point values:

Deer: Only one male and one female will be permitted no matter what species. Example: You could enter a mule deer buck and a whitetail doe, but not a mule deer buck and whitetail buck.

Male: 100 points + 10 bonus points per point over 1 inch long.  A maximum of 100 bonus points, or 10 scorable antler points will be scored for a total of 200 points.
Female: 75 points
Button Bucks will be scored as does. Amended 10-2-11

Moose, Elk, Caribou: Only one male and one female will be permitted. Unlike the deer category, you can enter one male and one female from each species.  Scoring will be the same as deer.

Male: 100 points + 10 bonus points per point over 1 inch long.  A maximum of 100 bonus points, or 10 scoreable antler points will be scored for a total of 200 points.
Female: 75 points

Rams, Antelope, Bison, or Exotics: Only one male and one female will be permitted no matter what species. Unlike the deer category, you can enter one male and one female from each species.  Scoring will be as follows.
Male: 100 points
Female: 75 points

Bears, Hogs, or Javelina: Only one animal can be entered per species.
Either Sex: 100 points

Turkey:  Only one turkey may be entered.
Either Sex: 75 points

Coyote, Bobcat, Fox: One of each species may be entered.
Either Sex: 50 points

Sportsmanship: Many people take hunting contests very seriously, and trying to win is the object of the game. The chief focus of this hunting contest will be on having fun. There will probably be some mistakes made, and once brought to light will be made right as soon as possible. The main thing is not to get excited whatever happens. There is no money, ATV’s, hunting trips to Alaska or other things on the line to elbow each other out of the way for. The only thing the winners can claim is bragging rights, and we should be able to be happy for whoever wins just as much as if it were ourselves. We are just a group of friends playing a game passing the time together. Kidding around and giving each other a hard time in a friendly manner is expected,  just like we were sitting around the campfire swapping tales over a good card game. So let’s all have good manners, be civil  and act respectful.

We have made one amendment to this years rules.  It wasn't clear if the animals entered in the contest had to be free range, or if they could be from a preserve or high fence.  We have decided that preserves and high fence animals will also be included.  We felt that this would provide the members more opportunities at a wider range of possible animals to hunt.  Furthermore, we have many disabled and or handicapped members that may not have any other means of harvesting game than hunting preserves.  So, to make it as fair as possible, and to give people the most options to hunt animals that may not be native to your area, you will be allowed to enter game taken from preserves or high fences.
  Thanks, UL
