Bows will now allowed during the states 9 day gun season. My son and I are thinking hard about going this route.
Can save some money by not buying a gun tag.

Funny, here it isnt even a question, bows/crossbows are allowed from the start of archery season through gun season and to the end of archery season. Our season starts August 1 for stone sheep in the north and runs to Dec 20 for deer with cougar season running to the end of Feb, all the while all archery equiptment is allowed.

We has a very strong vert. bow lobby (like my state, MN) that has managed to keep crossbows out during archery season. I can use one by permit, otherwise during rifle season only.

In spring 2010 the MN DNR conducted public input asking hunters if individuals age 55 and older should be allowed to utilize a crossbow during the regular archery season. Input was gathered at a series of face to face meetings around the state and through an on-line survey. The end result was that 42% supported, 43% opposed and 15% didn't care.

Currently hunters can use a crossbows with a disability permit or during the firearms deer season.

In Spring 2011 hunters participating in the WI Conservation Congress meetings supported the lowering of the legal age for crossbows from 62 to 55. What happened with that initiative? Wasn't this initiative forwarded by the WI DNR? Why haven't WI crossbow supporters pushed this initiative with the NRB and the legislature?

I read it on another site that the WDNR did not take the 55 recommendation to the NRB so it died there. I think it gets revisited soon though. Based on what I am hearing, this whole matter will be put to bed soon legislatively.

Am I reading it correctly that during gun season it's legal to hunt with a crossbow without a disability permit in WI.?

No. The crossbow laws have not changed in that regard. If a person wants to use a crossbow during the WI gun season, they would have to be a person who would already be allowed to use a crossbow due to age and/or disability. The new laws allows bowhunters to bowhunt during the gun deer season and allows disabled and/or elderly crossbow hunters to use their crossbow during the gun deer season. Neither could use their gun deer tag should they happen to kill a deer. They must use the archery tag (disabled/elderly crossbow hunters can use an archery tag to tag their crossbow kill)

Antis won't buck this change to the law here in WI because they have always whined that it was un-fair and that they should be allowed to bow hunt during the rut which usually coincides with gun season! They consider it a big win for them. Any hunter should be allowed to choose the type of archery weapon they want to use regardless of their age or disability. I am a disabled hunter and support full inclusion here in WI! Full inclusion won't change my disability but would allow healthy hunters to have their choice.  :thumbsu:

Well, it appears to be flying "under the radar" but according to the 4/6/2012 Journal Sentinel Greg Kazmierski is flying the flag to have the issue brought up for all hunters age 55 and older may use a crossbow during all archery deer hunting seasons.

Not sure which committee will have to push this, but I bet it can be done for 2012.  Hopefully this report is not just a "get your hopes up so they can be dashed again" deal.

Interesting that one of the big "anti's" regarding crossbow use would now be a proponent.

Just remember that the WBH helped write the legislation for crossbows in rifle season! (Just keep crossbows out of the WBH Archery season!) The anti's in Wisconsin have come to grips with the facts that crossbows would be allowed sooner or later. So NOW their push is to throw the crossbow community a bone with the rifle season and MAYBE the drop to 55. It is all just a ploy to keep the WBH Archery Season crossbow free! This may backfire on them.Which will be good for the Crossbow hunters of Wisconsin. Keep the faith!!

This is where Texas started, but it is progress. Especially there in Wisconsin. LOL! I agree that anyone who hunts with a trigger of any kind should be in the same category. Either make it archery season for all archery which would include crossbows, or make it a traditional archery season only. There wouldn't be too many hunters inthe woods that way though.

Well, Tim, unless the plan is to have Kaz propose full inclusion at age 55 and then just dally around, letting the bill sit forever until Walker wins the recall election or until we have a new governor  -- which will happen sooner or later --  I don't see what advantage passing this law would give the WBA.  Maybe it is "give them a little now so demand won't be so great later" or maybe they realize they just made ALL of the Wisconsin deer archery hunters angry with their shenanigans -- but, if it is not one of those things, I don't see what this buys them?

Will be interesting to watch.

The wbh didn't help write the latest crap law in Wisconsin, they actually wrote it and had their lawyers "convince" one of our crooked politicians to sponsor it. Yes, crossbows will be allowed in many seasons, but the wbh made sure they and their kind could use a traditional bow in EVERY season from mid September until mid January.  This includes the gun deer season, i also find it hard to believe Kaz is pushing for the 55 age thing, since he was the one that compared crossbow hunters to slob hunters and he sits on the board that supported the current bill that passed.  He is also a past board member of the wbh, the most anti crossbow group around.

I am sure mr anti will post a response here only to be ignored as he should be. :ass:
