Yesterday afternoon I took a half day of vac. from work. Was in the stand by 2pm on some nearby public land. Around 4pm had 3 little ones come into field about 30 yrd. Was actually debating sticking one decided to to pass 10 min. they didn't like something from the road so they disappeared back into the woods. 45 min later they come back out 80 yrd north of me.
As I am watching them a little button buck comes out 25 yrd from tree, as I am watching him and watching behind him for momma... here she comes. I try to pick my shooting lanes and realize there is another deer behind her. Back to watching mode when I see horns... big horns!(they had some ground shrinkage)
By the time I am done looking at the horns momma is 10 yrd from base of tree looking at me! I panic thinking, I don't have a shot at buck, should I take her if I can? No I will wait its been many yrs since I shot a buck. Watching momma, watching buck. Is she gonna bust me? Finally buck decides to follow, picked my shooting lane bleated. He stops behind a tree instead of between them. As soon as he clears tree  I shoot. I heard the solid whack, everyone runs off. 5-10 sec hear a great crash in the brush, much louder then a deer just running off. He has to be down! I send a few texts to friends hunting in the area. Lower the crossbow to the ground, take the back pack out of tree put it on and look over my shoulder. Another deer in the field?!? A big doe! (still have 5 tags left)
I put the back pack on climber seat, pull crossbow back up the tree ( I can't believe this is happening!). Cock it & load a bolt, and try to get a shot but there is a branch in the way, to short to shoot over it. I move the back pack to the platform, take climber seat and move it about 6" - 8" above platform and stood on seat to take the shot. Whack!! Deer runs 20 yrds goes down gets back up runs about 5 steps and falls over in middle of field! Get my equipment lowered to the ground and climb down. Thinking I would take equip.  back to truck and get a good light I went to check on the deer in the middle of field... IT HAS HORNS!! A small fork horn! 2 bucks in 1 night, I can't believe it!!
After the truck I go back in to look for the other one, find bolt covered in good blood. Find the blood trail looks like he painted the side of trees and ground! 40 yrds piled up!Attached File  1107111902 (2).jpg   196.38K   1 downloadsAttached File  1107111816.jpg   111.1K   0 downloadsAttached File  1107111903.jpg   181.16K   0 downloads

Congrats, nice buck.  Its amazing how those doe can grow antlers from the time you shoot and the time of recovery.  I had one do that on the foggy opening morning of MD rifle season.  Thought I had taken a nice doe, when I got to her she had a 3 pt antler on one side only.  The other side was completly broken off.  Made me purchase a bonus antlered deer tag real quick.  Congrats again and have a great day.

Nice job on the double.

Looking forward to the late January season in CT to get into the woods with the crossbow. I took a larg Doe two weeks ago with the bow but I am looking for one more this season with the new toy (Barnett C5.
