The debate of crossbow use in Wisconsin is starting to really heat up. Representative Gary Tauchen is promoting a bill with the possible "greater-lesser" clause in it. This actually means that a crossbow is greater than a traditional bow and lesser than a rifle. This could possibly force crossbow hunters to have a seperate season than archery hunters. It could possibly be during rifle season. This is a plus to introduce crossbows to Wisconsin, but a blow to those of us that are already licensed to use the crossbow during archery season. If you would like to write an e-mail concerning the matter and describing why you feel the crossbow should be allowed during archery season where it belongs, the address is Rep.Tauchen@legis.wisconsin.gov Please be respectful when pointing out your reasoning

Can't you use a crossbow during rifle season anyways?

Crossbows are only allowed to be used by persons with disabilities or over the age of 62 in Wisconsin. They did change the archery season this year to run during the gun season. The new proposed crossbow season will be for those hunters that choose to use a crossbow during that season and qualifications are not known as of yet. This proposed crossbow season will NOT effect over 62 or disabled hunters.

I think the main point is the "lesser-greater" clause. The crossbow by all definitions I can find is an archery equipment. I don't think the modern compound bows are the same and are greater than they use to be. It is called technology, and we grow bigger and better every day. To propose a bill and say that crossbow hunters may have to hunt during rifle season dosen't really seem fair. People have to stand up, but it is getting extremely difficult when members of the WBH are getting into offices of power. It should be about getting outdoors and enjoying yourselves no matter what is used. Why stick crossbow hunters with rifle season when bow hunters get 3+ mos. to hunt?

I believe the minimum age for using a crossbow in Wisconsin is 65, not 62.  Unless you carry a disability license, then age does not matter.

The WBH is very well connected with all the money they spend on lobbyist. The WBH is an anti HUNTER organization. They are only concerned with their narrow agenda & the rest of the WI sportsmen & hunters can take a backseat! It has never been about what is fair & right it is all about THEIR OWN selfish agenda! Stay the course! Maybe after Walker is recalled things may change!  :D Hiring a Deer Czar from Texas who is VERY pro crossbow can't hurt!

Didn't the hunters of WI vote to lower the age to 55 only to have the powers that be ignore the opinions of the hunters & support the WBH NO CHANGE to the 65 Rule! A small organization representing a FRACTION of the hunters but with money in the right pockets can get things done or BLOCK things from getting done! The MINORITY rules in Wisconsin if you have the right connections!

Yes, the people did vote at the meetings to lower the age limit to 55, but that was never included in the rules.

Somebody sent me this bill text several months ago. I guess I forgot to post about it here because I was busy hunting. It sounds like its going to pass. Its a pretty good bill. It allows anybody to use a crossbow in WI for deer, bear, turkey, small game, predators, (really all game) and there is another bill advancing for allowing crossbows for taking rough fish. I think this is great.

Ahhhh are you one of the snakes in the grass we gotta watch out for?I use to have the view of the WBH until I sat out of bow hunting for a year and a half. When a person loves the outdoors for all their life and something comes along and takes that from you it really sucks.I was stubborn for a year and a half with them anti crossbow views. But now im glad I have that choice and opportunity to use a crossbow.God forbid if something would happen to you were you couldnt use a compound anymore.....I bet you will have a really different view of the situation thenPosted Image

I should not judge him I dont know him..But at the same time he should not be afraid to own up to his views if he truly believes in them.

rancid...when will the crossbows be allowed? Has the WBH & their paid lobbyist kept the crossbow out of ARCHERY SEASON? As long as crossbows are not in YOUR sacred season your on board! If it is NOT FULL INCLUSION into archery sesaon the MAJORITY of Wisconsin hunters get screwed again by the well funded politically connected minority that is the WBH. It shows money can buy anything!!!

I dont know what he will say but I think its a great bill. If it passes I and everybody else will be able to use a crossbow for all WI species. I count that as fantastic by any measure. I thought this was a crossbow forum and this was the legislative area where people talked about crossbow legislation. You seem to want to talk about people. I would rather talk about this good piece of legislation. Dont you support everybody in WI being able to hunt with a crossbow for all species???? Are you one of those anti crossbow guys?

I am unsure where you seen or heard the bill is a done deal. The last I heard it was going to vote again on Jan.7, 2012 in Wausau, Wi. I also have to commend Crossbow Nation for having such a great site for us ALL to be able to come and rationally discuss are beliefs whether pro or con. It is nice  not having to be a member like other sites. I cannot find a logical reason by any of the WBH supporters to support there beliefs. I hear it is a greater weapon.  Is the modern muzzleloader not a greater weapon than it once was? My biggest complaint is the modern compound bow with carbon arrows, optic sites, 80% let-off, mechanical releases, light and short to handle, speed, scopes, are these not greater than my grandfathers recurve? I say we have archery season with 100% traditional and throw compounds in for the week of gun season. Would WBH agree with that? My thought exactly. Lets all have fun and enjoy the great outdoors. I use to hunt for food and now it's pounded in our heads to hunt for trophy's.

The WBH supports this "greater weapon" bill because it forever keeps the crossbow aligned with firearms season. It therefore keeps "THEIR SEASON" sacred. You are correct with all the innovations to the compound bow it its far closer to the crossbow than to the original stick or recurve. Because of organizations like the WBH & Pope & Young their efforts to turn archery season from a hunting expirence into a "trophy" hunt takes one step closer with this bill. Remember organizations like WBH has its own selfish personal agenda that does not necessarily align with the best interest of the hunters & sportsman & sportswomen of Wisconsin. It always has and continue to be an elitest organization supporting what is best for their vast minority position NOT what is best for the hunters of Wisconsin. They are not alone. Here in Pennsylvania the United Bowhunters of Pennsylvania attempted the same power play BUT the powers that be made decisions with the entire hunting population in mind not just a select very politically connected small organization. The majority rules does not allpy in Wisconsin when an organization like the WBH has the ploitical clout and politicians in their pocket doing their bidding. The WBH supports the "greater weapon" bill because it will keep the CROSSBOW COMMUNITY in it's place! OUT OF ARCHERY SEASON!!
