I was fortunate to kill 3 nice size does (I don't like to gnaw on horns) and think I killed three more I failed to find until too late. My wife decided to try hunting with me (after 26 yrs of marriage) and she loved it. Killed her first deer this year with a double on the same morning (a buck and doe). My middle son killed his first two deeer this year as well so it was a great year for memories for us. But thought I'd share this sneaky buck story. I'd bought my first crossbow a few days earlier and wanted to try it so I put the rifle and shotgun away and hunted exclusively with the Horton Brotherhood but our freezer was full so I was really hoping for a coyote as the first bow kill with the crossbow. I had blown a coyote call several times and was stopped to wait when I noticed out left of me behind a deadfall a movement...low and slow and careful. I slowly got positioned to check thinking to myself "oh yeah...this is a coyote and he's close enough to put daylight in with the xbow....this gonna be sweet!". So I'm watching and waiting for him to get clear of the debris he's sneaking through...and then I noticed 'Antlers'!!!! Cripes its a buck! A big one! But the sneaky old rascal was nearly belly crawling behind some bramble and deadfall and all I can see is ears and horns and a split second of hair here an there! He got past the deadfall, headed down a hill and stayed low and slow till there wasn't a shot! He couldn't have done a better job of eluding getting drilled if he'd been planning it for days. Never seen one do that....he came to see what the calling was and then slipped out of shot range just pretty as you please...never ran, never broke cover...
Sneaky old boy.

Any oppotunity to be in the woods is always a welcome opportunity to me - I am very fortunate to be in TN where I can be in the woods in 10 minutes drive and see bear, bobcat, coyote, deer, red wolves, fox etc and bow hunting is prime. Season just ended a few weeks ago and I can't wait for archery season! Its gonna be a long summer...gone try to fill it with squirrel, coyote and fishing.
