This is in no way a flame of any sorts. It is simply something I have always been courious about and has possibly done  way more than once but. With the very expensive and at times devastating damage done by feral hogs down here on the farms and ranches in Texas each year why do the ranchers and farmers charge so much to hunt them?
In places around here it cost almost as much to hunt hogs as it does to hunt white tail deer.
Yes son growing old is mandatory but growing up is still an option.

I think maybe its like I have a problem, pay me to help fix it.lol
At this point, don't think you are going to kill enough hogs to solve the problem, so make the most of a bad situation, if people are willing to pay cant hardly blame them.

I went to Georgia last spring for a hog hunt.  The guy charged $100.00 per day for as many hogs as you wanted to take, which in my experience is pretty cheap.  But while there we met the owner of the neighboring farm and he was astonished that anyone would pay to kill hogs.  I wish I had gotten his name, I think he would let us come on his place for free to take as many as we could.  Of course, even where there are lots of hogs, there is no guarantee you will get any.  But I suppose if I had hogs on my place I'd charge others to hunt.  And if it was profitable enough, I'd quit raising anything else and just let the hogs take over.

I'm doing okay although this body I am in isn't doing so hot. But the Lord is giving me a new one, so why worry about it?

I've got plenty of places around me where I can hunt hogs for free and killing as many as I can in a night is welcomed by the land owner. Those ranchers who are charging to hunt hogs are just practicing good capitalizism. If you've got folks willing to pay, AND you can help solve your own problem at the same time, why not?

However, I would suspect that there is much more to it than that. My neighbors know me and know how I hunt and react to various situations pretty well. They also know that I will take care of their property and animals and not act the fool. They know too that if I bring someone with me, that person is MY responsibility and not theirs.

In the cases where ranchers/farmers advertise for hog hunters, they must consider many more things, especially and most importantly, their legal liability if someone gets hurt or killed in any way while on their property. Therefore they probably are paying for a pretty hefty liability policy covering those hunters. Under Texas tort law, as a property owner, you owe the highest degree of caution to business invitees, which these hog hunters would fall under. Since hogs are one of the most dangerous animals you can hunt, no rancher/farmer I know would be stupid enough to be without that insurance coverage for people he/she charges to go hog hunting on their place. Add to that some of the idiots out in the field today hunting and you can see where I'm going and why.

Just imagine some first time hog hunter, who is NOT familiar with hunting them, but thinks they are just some stupid old pig like in a barn yard. Actually, barn yard hogs are not very stupid, but most folks don't know that. This inexperienced hunter wounds a large bore hog and goes into the tall grass after it like he's hunting whitetails. All kinds of nasty things can happen then, including our hunter getting eaten or gored up real bad. I can promise you he'll be looking for someone to sue for his extensive medical bills and lost time from work. His widow will too, if he's dead!  Unfortunately, that's our laws today and it's never the stupid person's fault, but just has to be the fault of someone else. In this case the rancher/farmer who charged him to hunt those wild hogs.

Unclebuck257, what part of Texas do you hunt in? I live south of Abilene and in the many attempts at finding a place to hog hunt where I can afford I have found the prices to be mostly from $100.00 per day no guarantees to $100.00 per day with all hogs you can get at $100.00 each. There are a couple that go 'Trophy hunts' where you stay in a lodge with all the amenities, meals included as well as having hogs you harvest field dressed and butchered for you at around $1,000 per weekend.

Real nice country up there Unclebuck, we head up to the Decatur/Denton area on a rare occasion to see family. I haven't considered hunting in that area because I'm usually too busy with family but I bet there is some outstanding hunting around there.

Pan,

Thank you and yes there is, in certain areas. It's like everything else, you have to know where to go. The Grasslands aren't far from me either and that's open to anyone, with a few restrictions. Not sure if they allow hog hunting in there or not.

I think we are going about it ll wrong, don't ask to hunt hogs in landowerns property! tell them we can try to control their feral hog problem ..for a price right!!!
YES!we need to get oganised as group of paid hog hunters...for a price! we need to get a sexy name for the gruop, advertise on net, set a price , but leave  an out for negotiating!
Must buy some trap doors, some wire cattle panels. etc and take picture for posting them on net.Do any of us have dogs? Also an electric feeeder, print some cards, etc. make it 'look' like a business, qoute owner a price for butchering the carcuses, for taking them to his favorite charity and fallow true with it, let him know we mean business, or donate to some local church, just like a ligitemate business
Do we have anyone with butchering experince on deer?  Same thing!
After we get recognized as regular hog hunters, we can decide to do as we please with the meat, frezze it, give it away, eat it, whatever

Where do we have the most hog hunters? or wanna bees? if out of town, organise a meeting with said intention! let's get this thing rolling  :thumbsu: , Don't just let us sit on our hands  And complain about greedy landowners who want to charge us a fee
