I can recall staring at the images of crossbows in the pages of catalogs decades ago when I was a child. It seemed like such a magical device but I never purchased one.

I did get into archery, target at first, then 3D. Never any "good" just always trying to be better than I was before.

Last summer I took a fall from my bicycle at over 30 mph and got more than road rash. I damaged my rotator cuff. I babied it for a time, then began to exercise it. I'm regaining the strength I had in my upper body from before and can do most things that I did before the wreck.

Except pull a bow. I can mimic the draw action with weights and cables at 55 lb at the gym, but trying to pull either of my compounds to draw length is difficult and painful.

3D season starts in little over a month and I don't want to sit on the sidelines again.

As with many others who love the flight of the arrow but have had physical limitations placed upon them I think I will be purchasing a crossbow. Initially for target/3d but as with my compound bows I may even use it to harvest game at some point. In Texas crossbows are considered equals to all other bows for bow-only season.

Though not yet giving up hope of returning to compound archery I will soon be taking the step into the path that began so long ago, looking at those wood and laminate recurve crossbows in the catalogs many, many (too many) years ago.

Suggestions for equipment welcome.
Excalibur Vortex
Stock extender
Vari-zone scope
20" Excalibur Firebolt arrows, 150 gr. field tips
S5 String Suppressors
Excel String

If you call what your crossbow shoots a bolt instead of an arrow Urban Legend will have a quarrel with you.

To Crossbownation

Been there and done the injury thing, but with my back. I too am new as yourself to crossbow.

The crossbow you choose will be dependant on the amount you want to spend. For 3D shooting with crossbow, speed may be a factor as well as upper end equipment, at least these were factors for me when choosing a compound rig. Same applies to distance shooting IMHO. :)

Seems like a lot of us have injuries to cope with. I am trying to use my remaining "abilities." Wrestling with the same decisions most of us probably do...recurve, compound, new models, proven models etc.

I will shoot a bunch of them, now that I have my disability permit.

Thanks to everyone for the open forum. Very nice to get others opinions.

Have a great day!

Nice play on your name,
Glad to see more and more texans joining us!I have decide to not just enjoy crossbows, but, actually making them (bow and stock), bolts! Now I have all of equiptment ! Made my first one at 12 or 13 years of age with help from retired bow builder, , now still have 'ich' for bow shooting , but , was never worth a darn with longbow, so I just prefer crossbows
