Last deer of the season last year, 36 yards, very high alert, looking right at me. It didn't move until after the arrow had gone through completely.
Your story just like mine ..i was walking back from my stand in the last few minutes from day light..hard to see clear..when i saw SOMETHING looks like deer neck between the bushes..my xbow was loaded and safety off..i look at this thing and i notice he was a deer..all i remember aiming my xbow and push the trigger..then i heard the bolt sound going inside the deer ..crushing sound, and deer flying away..the shot was low hit the bottom of the lungs(i couldn't tell the distance that time..but it was about 35 yards)..he was surprised to see human..i had my 3d camo ..all this happend in 5 secounds..but to find the deer take us 2.5 hours..he lost alot of blood but still fighting for his life ..he was young buck (9 non typical points).
Now my point in this post is : if you surprise the deer you might gain few secounds before he react..IMO
