From what I've been reading..first crossbow and Barnett Commando makes it sound like this post was from the 80s Well, it is my first crossbow. I got it from an antiquities dealer from the city outskirts. Everything looks fine, tested it too but I just noticed that after just a dozen shots, the string started to loosen its strands.

In case the string breaks, do they have any more strings for this crossbow? I'll post the actual pic (taken during the sale) and tell me what's missing or what needs to be repaired or what.

Thanks for the help

Any archery pro shop could make you a string or you can buy a string jig and make your own. It is not to difficult to do.

The string should be no problem. Replace it before it breaks. It will be small money and should last a while with proper care. Good luck and be safe, it is a cool bow!!

Thank you for the replies. Unfortunately I do not know of any archery/hunting shops near my place. Oh and thanks for pointing out the value of this piece. Did some research after you guys informed me and seems that this is quite a keeper.

Would those commercially available strings on eBay work? And how do i measure the string length?

Do i start from the end of the loops? (in red) or do i measure the whole length of string? (in green)

Thanks for helping out a newbie  :thumbsu:

nice mk1 commando .brass hooks identify it as early mk 1.later mk1 had plastic covers over the hookes bonded on.take care of the limb.its 175lb no longer made secondly im told barnetts 150lb replacements for the wildcat produce arround 120lb if that due to the power strokes being less on the commando.i think its 25.5 " length string you need.great bows solid build and quite a few finding their ways back out the attic of late.limbs the chinese make a jaguar limb at 175 lb and their a good replacement with a shorter string they generaly use 26.5" however i use 25.5"or 1/4 less due to the limb being slightly shorter to save having problems catching the string on drawing .great enjoy it.

Oh thanks for the information, it'd be great help. As of now I'm down with just eBay to source out the strings..too far from any archery store I know of.

Thanks again!
