I live in a town. A small town. We finally have a business with an indoor range, but 20 yards is hardly sporting for a crossbow.
A a vertical archer I did practice driveway shooting. My archery target set up so that I could fire from the driveway into my car-port for 10 yard shots, precision being the goal.
How, though, to practice when I don't have access to a real range? Tips? Opinions? Suggestions? Horror stories?
Perfect practice makes perfect

If you call what your crossbow shoots a bolt instead of an arrow Urban Legend will have a quarrel with you.

I practice as often as I can, But I do have room to shoot 40 yards. IMHO we should shoot as often as we can and change it up, don't shoot from known yardage's, shoot off hand and from different positions. Trying to simulate different situations you may come across while hunting. Get to know your bow and you will become a better hunter for it. As for shooting distance if all you can do is 20 yards then it's all you can do. Try and find some where to shoot with more room. Here in Kentucky there are public ranges for practice and sighting in our equipment I don't know about where you live but you could contact your wildlife department and maybe they can help you or at least direct you to someone that can.

Dropzone has some good advice there to follow. Just like with your verticle bow, you gotta start with the basics and work up. That means SAFETY. Read the instructions, watch the video/CD if one is included, learn the proper way to cock/load/shoot/de-cock the bow, and learn how to be consistantly SAFE. If your consistantly safe then your going to have less of a chance of getting yourself or anyone else hurt. If 20 yards is all you can do, then at least you know that you'll be confortable in that range. If you have the chance to look around for a state owned range or a private range that will allow you to shoot your crossbow that has the type of yardage your looking for, then it's worth the investment for a yearly membership because you'll only become a better marksman. Practice often, practice safely, know your target and beyond, be responsible, and take the most ethical shot that you can in the traditional Fred Bear wisdom. Good luck, and happy hunting. Greg

I live in the Texas Hill Country. No one has basements here since it would require blasting/jack hammering to create one.
I can get to a range, just not as easily as getting to my car port. I'll do what I can do. Thanks for the tips!

State land, state parks in off season, we have a couple large horse camps/parks here that are wide open. Check to see what restrictions might apply, but mabe your state has flattened some land out for you already. Ive got 50 yards of flat shooting on my property, after that i do the above.

I can get to the practice range our archery club uses at times, just not very often. Was wondering if there was anything like dry fire practice (I know, do NOT dry fire!) for firearms.
