Getting old is no fun! Just be careful not to over do it too early. You do not want a relapse! Take care & good luck!

Remember to think positve! We still have ABILITY! It is easy to focus on the part where the doctor says you have a disability.

Broken left wrist, never healed; three back surgeries with cadaver bone in from the front and titanium rods in the back. But hey, I'm not dead yet....

Walk as much as you can, stretch whatever will move, think positive, chase the wife and grandkids whenever possible, smile a bunch and share your stories. Hunt whenever posible.

And remember, when you are in the tree stand thank God you are still able to go to our favorite church (the woods).

JUST KEEP MOVING is the key... don't overdo it, but do it! Then afterward, it's RICE --- REST. ICE. COMPRESSION. ELEVATION.

LOL, as I read this thread I can see all the Xbow companies salivating and thinkin' .... "Yeah, these are the guys we want to market to!" Just think of it, a SMART arrow... laser guided by the scope. Oh, and mechanical cocking. Push a button and claws automatically engage the string and pull it back for cocking then recess into the fore grip, waiting for the next pull. All you do is place the arrow on the flight rail and squeeze the trigger!  It's coming!

FWIW, getting old is not for the faint of heart.  Wait til you hit 55 and the body really starts going down hill. :lolu:

I beat you by three years. Had to take disability at age 52 with chronic arthritis in about every joint I have. Worked 30 years in a railroad yard and throwing track switches probably 100 times a day and climbing on cars to tie up handbrakes finally got me down. I can barely walk when I first get out of bed but after moving around 10 minutes or so the stiffness goes away somewhat but the pain is still there. I bowhunted for 31 years but had to give it up this pass season and  go with a crossbow and I love it. Beats sitting at home watching TV.........:)

I agree, Keep moving is a big plus. I do not walk enough my self. I can tell a differance by the time hunting season is over because I walk so much during hunting season!!
I hear ya, ZRT. I turn 67 nextweek. Am 80%, D.A.V.  I still hunt and fish. And while doing so, my pain seems to go down. I just pay for it later that night. Just remember one thing;  Don't give up. Don't ever, ever give up. I'll hunt and fish til the day I die. Then, ''The Good Lord,'' will put me in an even better huntin' ground. .............i hope.
It's not the kill, but the hunt, where memories are made.

Just thought I would throw a little humor for all. I went 2 for 2 on rotor cuff injuries.I also went 2 for 2 on reclining chairs.(YEP-BROKE BOTH OF THEM).You can only sleep in a certain position for so long after the surgery-Icould not sleep in a bed for a while.--on both I slide down to a point that when I tried to sit up I couldn't--so I pushed so hard on the side that it broke. My wife now has a new living room furniture.OH! and I have a new crossbow--go figure :gym:

I'm looking at rotator cup surgery soon so how long will I be down? As long as I'm ok for next deer season I'll be satisfied.

For me, six weeks with physio. But I was in my twenties then. I do know that a soft pillow in your armpit and sleeping on your side will work wonders for sleeping. Good luck. :thumbsu:

hankenhunter is right six weeks is about the norm--just don't push yourself too hard on the recovery--no pain no gain does not work here.

One of the reasons I took up crossbow was that I injured my shoulder, and although I could still pull back my compound, I experienced pain each time I practiced. I decided to buy a crossbow and never looked back. I started doing my own physical therapy with exercise and light weights doing more reps. Shoulders still not 100%, but doubt they ever will be. But they don't hurt as much and I'm able to do more without pain. At 55, I'm sticking with the crossbow and loving the fact that I can still hunt archery. I have great success in the last two years and hope for continued success in the future. Good luck on your recovery, don't rush, take it one day at a time.

I'm getting my 1st xbow tomorrow. I'm 50 but have broke my left elbow and have had shoulder blade issues also. I'm keeping my z-max with 60lb. limbs to use when it's not too cold to pull it back. I like to stay out a long time on hunts and when it's cold, I just can't pull the compound very easily. Glad that Michigan adopted the xbow!

Yup I don't know about shoulders but I've had lots of enjuries to my knees and ankles and beleive me it helps a lot to just keep going. I walk at least 2 miles every day and if I can I get another 2 miles in the afternoon and it sure has helped me to be able to keep going. Not going to say that when the weather changes it don't hurt but at least I can keep going this way...Howard

Seriously I would be looking at the Hickory Creek in line draw lock bow. Worth a half hour investigating it by google and youtube. I have one and getting the new bullpup version as well.
