Here is another weird day I had while hunting. It was getting on into the season and I had let a few small deer go. I decided one day that it was time not to be so picky for some freezer meat. A small doe came out and was grazing 20-25 yards from my natural ground blind. I hesitated because I try to practice some kind of game management on allowing the deer get bigger no matter what the other hunters are doing. After what seemed like 15 minutes I decided to take the doe. I went to draw back and my release had something in it which caused it not to lock and at a partial draw it flung my arrow into the clearing, which got the deers attention. I stood still for awhile and the deer continued to graze.I drew back again and at that point the doe caught my drawing motion-had my vertical bow. I stood still at full draw what seemed like, well to long and had to let off. I did so to fast and the arrow went about 10 ft and stuck in ground. Amazingly the walked toward me I thought whats with the deer not getting spooked. The deer was about 10-15 feet in front of my ground blind staring my way trying to figure out what I was. I had my Ghillie suit on( thats why for ground hunting I like them). It walked behind a tree that is part of my ground blind. I drew back a 3rd time leaned foward to lean out around the tree at this very up close shot. I put the 20 yd pin low on the deer since it was so close and released. I was barely around the tree, my arrow from flexing in flight like aluminum ones do flexed into the tree and made a cracking noise. I couldnt believe it, the deer was standing there. At that point I was amazed and said to myself you deserve to get away. I made some kind of deliberate movement and the deer went about 60 or 70 yards away and stopped. When I went out in the clearing to see what happened to the arrows I shot the deer was standing down the way looking at me. I made some more motion and the deer finally left. I had 2 arrows in the ground and found the 3rd broke into 2 pcs. When I shot around the tree it was so close the flexing of the arrow and energy of the bow caused it to snap. This happened the same year the big buck got away from a outright miss. What a season and what a lesson in humility. After that I checked my equipment very close each time I hunt. Just thought I would share what seems like a made up story but its real.
