Just got into this game & really enjoying it, but got some ?s.
1- Can I use bails of hay for a target block?
2- If so, how thick should it be?
3- How long might it last being left outside?

Thanks, guys.

No.  A hay bail will not stop the power of a crossbow.  You will just end up ruining your arrows.  A good target is the way to go.

try this for target points, take a feed sack and stuff with old clothes or material paint a few dots on it, will stop any arrow. easy removal. for broadheads buy a target, idea i read about here works great

Wal-mart sells a buckmaster target that is good for field tips.As for broadheads my favorite is the little Rinehart 18-1.I would stay away from
the hay.

I agree with these guys, hay will not work. You will only ruin fletchings, or lose arrows shooting at hay bales.

Oh me! LOL!  Reminds me of when I first started shooting a Vert. bow. My target was in front of a cinderblock garage. When I moved, there were still field points with inserts sticking out of it!

The only reason I am necroposting on this thread is becuase my spouse bought me this Buckmaster 360 target 'cuz she works at Walmart. I fired a half dozen bolts this afternoon into it, only to have one bury itself half way up the vane with about two inches of that 20 inch bolt sticking out of the target. I shot that bolt from 20 yards with the Tornado. I could not loosen this one up to back it out, and I ended up breaking/cracking/shattered the bolt at the vane. The bolt was a  plain jane Parker carbon (carbon express make) with a field tip. Needless to say this p.o.s. target is going back to the store. Don't buy this one for higher fps crossbows. There are better options than the Buckmaster 360.

I use a large round bale of hay as an emergency backstop for my targets in case I happen to miss the entire target.lol. It happens. lol. One tip is to set it with the rounded side toward you or the arrow will bury between the layers of hay. The rounded side will stop arrows from penetrating too deeply as you are shooting into many tightly packed layers.
