first time out this year even and quite a story, kind of long to, but pretty cool...

I wanted to go out last night but my plans got messed up so I got out late, I decide to go behind my parents and just sit in an old natual blind about half way down a hill between two small fields and more or less just check out the activity, the lower field usually has quite a bit of activity in it but is hard to hunt because of its layout, unfortunately I couldnt see the lower field from my blind because of all the foliage yet so I decided to just sit in my blind, basically do nothingmore than enjoy the outdoors, and hopefully ambush something traveling between fields...
about an hour later I heard alot of bluejay activity behind me on top of the hill and shortly after heard something walking down, I got ready and waited for it to come into view and was completely surprised to see my 13yo son walk past about 20 yards away headed toward the lower field, he was in camo and walked down almost to the edge of the field and then snuck over to an old oak tree on the edge of the field that we had sat under last year (and I had missed a nice buck that night with him with me), he told me later that he had wanted to come back and find me so he could sit and hunt with me, which is cool!
he didnt see me sitting there and I wasnt much into the night anyway so I figured Id pack up and sneak down behind him and scare the hell out of him, but when I got down to a few yards of him I could see into the field fairly well and seen he was watching two bucks fighting! so I snuck up beside him and sat down and we watched the action for about another hour, 8 deer came out, a few of them bucks, which were getting pretty heavy into their rut mode, working scrapes along the field edge, fighting, chasing each other and the does around, and being as vocal as I've ever heard them in that field before, unfortunately none came closer than 100yards...
I decided to rattle and grunt at them a little just to see what would happen, and let my son experience it, which pissed off this 8 pointer quite a bit, and although it gained alot of attention nothing came closer than 100 yards... and it seemed like nothing had any intension of doing so... but knowing that buck was curious and that they sometimes makes a round around the field edge checking scrapes when they're rutting I decided to wait until dark and see what happened and luckly just before dark this 8 point decided to walk up the field edge and do just that!
there was still alot of brush and I didnt have many shot oppertunities to begin with, and he decided to turn a little and angle toward us which put his path of travel through the brush directly in front of us, when he hit an opening in the leaves I took the shot, it was a stretch at about 40 yards(the last lock I got on him with the range finder was 45 yards) and I hit him a little high, but he dropped right in his tracks regaudless...
my son was wound right tight, it was kind of hard to contain him for a few minutes, he helped drag it to the field edge and helped gut it out, we're going to skin it and cut it up later this afternoon and he's patiently waiting... its not the biggest buck but the fact that I got to shoot it with my son there and he got to expreince that whole ordeal from beginning to end makes it priceless for me, of all the years of my hunting this is now my #1 most favorite hunt, and I'll never forget it!

Great story, KLS!  I enjoyed it immensely.  That is way cool to have your son with you.  That buck may not be "the biggest buck," but it is pretty darn nice.  Congratulations!

thanks guys, it was a pretty awesome experience! we skinned and quarter him this afternoon and my son did most of the work, he was pretty pumped, it was cool! it brings a whole new meaning to things when your kid actually takes such an interest in it, and all on his own!

Well done!  I loved the story and the pictures.  Your son will never forget that hunt either.  Special memories were made for both of you and that is what hunting should be all about.

Great story and congrats on the nice buck.  Am sure this hunt will be a great memory for you and your son.  Fantastic he's also helping you with the butchering.  I love seeing the youths getting involved.  Hope you enjoy many hunts together.
