I cranked my bow to cock it (which I found was not as easy when a person is real excited because it is the first hunt with a crossbow) and somehow aftera much longer time than usual, it was accomplished with no mishaps. Next I tried to make myself as prepared as possible and that is when I discovered I had left several things I needed back in camp. . .that excitement thing again.
It was a beautiful break in the weather and a good time to be out. Leaves with color changed and leaves falling. Every type of squirrel and bird flying and fluttering around. . .and soon. . .yup I was asleep.
After nearly dropping my bow, I came to and 3 large turkeys walked by like they were the local PETA inspectors checking everything out. Now it is legal to take turkeys. . .(if a person had put into the draw which is almost guaranteed in the fall). . .in my wisdom as I had not seen turkeys around camp in at least 2 years, I had not done so-mistake 1. . . well actually not but . . .about 20 minutes later I heard a deer moving to my right, coming from the swamp so I made ready and watched the runway that went to the food plot in front of me between two good stands of oaks. . .lesson 1. ..deer go where you least expect them. .. the deer went to my blind side and I could hear it blowing and stomping so I assumed it had seen me . . . but it had seen my b-in-law's jeep parked about 70 yards behind me in a stand of pines and oaks. . .whoever thinks crossbow hunting is easy should try it when disabled. . .I could not move my bow around to my blind side easy enough so I never got a good look. . .it bounded back into the swamp for another day. . .
I sat through a nice sunset and enjoyed the quiet. When Al came for me he said he had seen turkeys (also had not applied for a permit) and many tracks but no deer. All in all we said it had been a good afternoon and an enjoyable first hunt of the year. It revved us up for another hunt and that can not happen soon enough.
