Went on my first crossbow hunt this pm from 5 - 7:30.  After my br-in-law helped make me as comfortable as possible on an oak ridge, he went down to the opposite side of the swamp that was below me.

I cranked my bow to cock it (which I found was not as easy when a person is real excited because it is the first hunt with a crossbow) and somehow aftera much longer time than usual, it was accomplished with no mishaps.  Next I tried to make myself as prepared as possible and that is when I discovered I had left several things I needed back in camp. . .that excitement thing again.

It was a beautiful break in the weather and a good time to be out.  Leaves with color changed and leaves falling.  Every type of squirrel and bird flying and fluttering around. . .and soon. . .yup I was asleep.

After nearly dropping my bow, I came to and 3 large turkeys walked by like they were the local PETA inspectors checking everything out.  Now it is legal to take turkeys. . .(if a person had put into the draw which is almost guaranteed in the fall). . .in my wisdom as I had not seen turkeys around camp in at least 2 years, I had not done so-mistake 1. . . well actually not but . . .about 20 minutes later I heard a deer moving to my right, coming from the swamp so I made ready and watched the runway that went to the food plot in front of me between two good stands of oaks. . .lesson 1. ..deer go where you least expect them. .. the deer went to my blind side and I could hear it blowing and stomping so I assumed it had seen me . . . but it had seen my b-in-law's jeep parked about 70 yards behind me in a stand of pines and oaks. . .whoever thinks crossbow hunting is easy should try it when disabled. . .I could not move my bow around to my blind side easy enough so I never got a good look. . .it bounded back into the swamp for another day. . .

I sat through a nice sunset and enjoyed the quiet.  When Al came for me he said he had seen turkeys (also had not applied for a permit) and many tracks but no deer.  All in all we said it had been a good afternoon and an enjoyable first hunt of the year.  It revved us up for another hunt and that can not happen soon enough.

[quote name='ridgehunter']deer go where you least expect them. ..

i am also disabled and must use a atv to get to my blind so i have a real good idea of how difficult hunting can be. when in the blind i face south, which is the direction MOST of the deer come from, but saturday evening a big fat lone doe came  down  the atv  trail that leads to the blind, the trail is directly behind me so i did not see her(definely did not hear her either!:() until she had already busted me  while sneaking around the left side of the blind at only 25 yards. i tried to turn slowly so i cud get a shot but it was not meant to be.she did not blow and high tail it out  of the area, she just turned and walked into a field and stood at about 60 yards for a good 10 minutes and then just simply walked away. she was not scared but knew something was not right  so hopefully her and my slick trick have a  meeting in the near future.  it was a beautiful evening with temps in the 50's and lots of  fall color in the trees......jeff

Last weekend's hunt:

COLD AND MISERABLE, first time that I can remember wearing 3 layers of insulated clothing bowhunting.  Was 20 or below in the mornings.  The wind and blowing rain at times kept the deer spooky and under cover.. . they are smarter than hunters;).  My best friend and companion was the camp wood stove:D.  I only saw one fawn but some of the other hunters saw some nice deer but could get no shots due to the weather.  I only went out 3 times over the weekend and relegated myself to the care and feeding of the stove; and as much kp as I could handle.  All in all a great weekend for reading and telling tales around the stove.  The quiet and soft crackling of the woodfire made for a relaxing weekend if not a productive one.

Amen it's great to get out. I to am finding it difficult hunting this year. Having to rely on someone to drop me off and come get me, but it's good to be alive. Only been three times so far.

Enjoyed reading of your hunting experiences.  Being out there and taking in nature is always great, IMO.  True, I haven't been able to that much, but appreciate doing so, when one of my nephews takes me out there with him.  The peaceful time and beauty of it all is the best.  Good luck to you getting out, again, and hope you get a shot at a nice one.  ;)
