I had just got married in Jan "82" wife had to remind me what year. I had taken a restoration job of this old Victorian mansion in the country and hired a carpenter to replace corner blocks and German lap siding. I also bought a new Stembler Compound bow and was getting my abilities down to where I felt comfortable hunting with it. At the same time one day practicing my shoulder began to really give me pain. I went to the Doc's he took a look and said see that lump there I said what lump thats muscle, he LOL and said no it's not dummy that your tendons all balled up. Turns out they ripped off the bone taken a 50 cent size piece of cartilage with it. It was repaired and he said; never pick up another bow, you shoulder will not take it. So back to the construction site. The carpenter gave me a Barnett commando with scope and arrows. The land owner of the big house let me hunt a piece of his property. Opening day in "82"  {finialy getting my date strighten out, getting old} I walked in found a spot on a bank looking down on a creek between 2 thickets. A squirrel hunter walks up the other side and out of sight. The a rabbit runs across my legs followed by a big fox. That was cool. Next I hear crackling of twiggs to my right , figured the squirrel was leaving the woods and a few minutes later I hear the crackling again to my left. Then I can see brown through the left thicket, my heart goes through the roof, he steps out dosn't even look at me . At 5' eye level I try to look through the scope but have to look under with in a few short seconds I just point the bow at his ribs and fire. That thing lit out of there like Well he just been shot LOL, I never had a deer hunt before didn't even think
of following blood I saw where he went and it rained the night before so once across the creek I just followed the fresh turned up leaves. I found him 60 yards. My 1st deer a 7 point dressed 147. I asked the Lord now What ! Well I guess it's like a rabbit so I had at it and did good. Dragged him down the hill into the creek, Did I tell ya I crushed my lower 4,5&6 on a flight down a set of stairs 3 years earlier ? So I walk to my Trail Duster 4X4, drove to the edge of the woods get out the long rope and tie one end to the deer the other to the hitch and the deer was out. The hardest thing was getting him in the truck.
I was a hooked bow hunter, wife became a widow during the months from Sept throu Jan. Raised 3 boys on venison. Which was nice they never had store bought red meat. Not to long ago my oldest called me and said Dad you need to come over I just cooked up this Porter House you got to try it. LOL

Great story.  Brought back a few memories.   That was a nice first deer.

Back in 1982 I graduated from high school.  Took either my first or second doe that year with a rifle.  Did not get my first bow kill until a few years later tho I tried hard.  Sounds like we both have had our share of hard knocks.  Got to make the best out of them and keep on truckin'.  :D

I'm doing okay although this body I am in isn't doing so hot. But the Lord is giving me a new one, so why worry about it?
