6AM this morning I wake up, with a homemade target on my mind and remember i have 6 to 10 empty corn sacks out in the barn from last deer season and there is also alot of old burlap sacks in there as well. so i go out there and rearrange the barn a little and dig out all the burlap and poly sacks. The Burlap isn't usable falling apart no longer in a sack shape. so I take 2 poly sacks and put one inside the other and then fill it with the Burlap remnants. I found one burlap sack that was decent and I slipped the stuffed poly bag into the burlap one.
once I got back to the house I didn't have anything readily available to hold the target bag up, I noticed some old tires over by the garage so I took one and stood the bag up inside it. I then took some black spray paint and pianted some aiming points on the bag.
So now to shoot the bag, I loaded an arrow and paced off 20 yds and let one fly. Nice solid thwack and the bag is still standing. Arrow went in about 7 inches and pulled out like it was nothing 2 fingers.
Thanks to all who came up with this easy to make target.

I, too, use the old plastic grocery sacks such as the WalMart sacks, to stuff a bag target; Works great! The secret of stopping arrows with cotton, plastic sacks, worn out clothes, etc. is compression. If you compress the filler material, it stops the arrows by inducing friction on the arrow shaft rather than resistance on the point of the arrow.
In order to get lots more compression on your filler material, fill a plastic garbage bag about half-full with your chosen material, then duct tape the open end of the garbage bag around your vacuum cleaner hose and fire up the vacuum cleaner. You may want to duct tape a piece of fabric over the end of the vacuum hose first, to keep it from ingesting your filler material while still allowing air to flow out of the garbage bag and into the vacuum.
You have probably seen the advertisements for those "Space Bags" on TV, where they use a vacuum to suck the air out of a bag full of winter coats in order to store them in the closet more efficiently; this is the same idea.
This method will reduce a garbage bag full of WalMart sacks down to about 1-1/2" thick.
Fill your target bag full, or nearly full, of these flattened airless garbage bags full of filler material and close your target bag. Then take a pitch-fork or similar piercing instrument and skewer the sewn-up target bag a couple of times. In a few minutes, your target will be plump and full and ready to use.

Sorry, did not mean to step on your toes! You had already posted the vacuum compression idea before me.
I didn't read your post until after I posted my message, I got excited about my message and didn't notice that there were two pages of posts in this thread.

Great idea! Do you have any problem with the arrows hitting the other end of the bucket (the bottom of the bucket)? Would it be a problem if the arrows did go through the other end?

0 downloadsIn DIY targets the clothing is what commonly works best. You can put clothing in an old feed sack, potatoe, sack cardboard box or a plastic bucket. In most cases they work but how they look and hold up varies. If you want the longest lasting Diy target take a look at the Rag Bag from Third Hand. Put a little time and a 2"x12" and you have something that looks good and last.

I just received my Rag Bag. Did you split or cut the Rag Bag when you put it in the 2x12 frame? Do you have any compression on the rags, or do you just stick them in the door opening of your 2x12 frame?
