Chuck...it's just the first step...and from what I heard, it was not easy.....there's still the Assembly committee vote...then the full Assembly and the full Senate....

IMO, it will cause problems :(
I think that it is just smarter to ask for permission, and if you have written permission then the limit can go down to zero feet!

If the neighbor is against hunting and you shoot a deer and retrieve on his property without permission he will probably charge you with trespassing if he catches you.

If a neighbor is just afraid for their kids safety then you may be able to show him where you will be, perhaps ONE particular area, and perhaps you can have a sign  letting him know when you are there so his family is not taken by surprise!

You might even be surprised to hear that he hates the deer eating his shrubs and landscaping and will let you sit on his porch :D

I actually suspect that many hunters will just take the 150 foot rule and use it without any neighborly contact which will most certainly raise the number of complaints. IMO, Town Councils will probably listen to their taxpayers and might even enact local ordinances to reduce hunting if they get enough or very vocal complaints.

BUT, I may be wrong too :)

all good points edge....making good neighbors is and always has been important....the concern over hunters 'misusing' this privilege is a valid one....all a town has to do is adopt a 'no discharge' ordinance...and have it use the verbiage 'deadly weapon'...and all hunting stops....the odds of a deer dying in someone's backyard will definitely go up in the more densely populated areas....which will lead to more problems....

I'm for this legislation...it really doesn't impact me at all...but, I see it as a win for hunters...and any win for hunters is a loss for the anti's.....

The 150' is going to open a couple of spots for me. Condos all the way around. One is a 15 ac piece that I can only hunt one small area. The other spot houses a very large buck. The 450' only allows about a 10' sq. area there. I know where he beds and a few times have walked with in 30yds of him and another smaller buck. They are very comfortable there for now. :D

that's really the hope...that passage of this bill increases hunter access....but, with privilege comes responsibility...hopefully, hunters will remain congnizant of landowners and their rights...and not cause more problems than this legislation seeks to solve

I strongly disagree with you edge. Pennsylvania has this law and I have not heard of any of these problems you are talking about. I think if this law passed it would be one of the best things to ever happen to bow hunters in this state. NJ is one of the most densely populated states in this country! We are losing hunting land every day! This would open up many opportunities for all that love this sport.

OK, I hope that you are right :)

My main point is that there is NO LIMIT on how close you may hunt to your neighbor as long as you have their permission.
Since you ( generic you ) don't have their permission it follows that one of the following apply:

a) you don't get along which will p$$ him off by hunting @150 feet;
:) he is anti hunting which will p$$ him off by hunting @150 feet;
c) you are afraid he will say no...which will p$$ him off by hunting @150 feet;
d) he is afraid for his children's safety..which will p$$ him off by hunting @150 feet;
e) some other reason...which will p$$ him off by hunting @150 feet :)

I agree that hunting in areas where the deer are now comfortable is a great way to get a big one, but I don't see doing it without the neighbors consent advances the cause of hunting in NJ.
Since I see it as a causing conflicts I don't see the advantage to hunting in general.

I have personally hunted near a piece of property where there were anti hunting neighbors. The people that hunted right next door needed to call F&G every time a deer died on their property. Sometimes they got it and sometimes it was spoiled.....IMO, it is not worth the aggravation....but to each his own :)

Castaway...u make some very good points...but, Edge's concerns are well-founded.  I listened to the testimony made before the Senate committee on 6/3.  The very issues that Edge mentioned were brought up or alluded to by every anti-hunter that stepped up to the microphone.  I don't know how strong the anti-hunter sentiment is in PA, but I can tell you that it's very strong in NJ.  Just look at safebackyards.com, and look at the propaganda war being waged.  The densely populated areas that you mention are mostly populated with anti-hunters, who will do everything they can to see that this does not pass.  They even used full inclusion of crossbows against this legislation.

for me I hope this passes
it will open up a whole lot of property that I currently can not hunt
and am limited to the trees and runs I can hunt because of the 450 rule
the guys out west think this is dumb,they have some great tracks of land to hunt but when you only have a couple of spots to hunt, and both of those spots limit you to a 30 x 30 area where you can put up a treestand, it would be nice to move another 50 ft to the left or right and hunt at 400 verses 450.

I have another spot that the landowners want the deer gone, and there are a ton of them. yet at the back corner of the lot were I have permission I am at 420 to the closest neighbor. no good they don't hunt and think meat grows on trees, so I can only hope.

That is what would be great about this if it gets passed. There are so many good places to hunt in this state that are just under 450ft. Just because you can hunt at 150 does not mean everyone will.

As far as the "ANTI NEIGHBOR", why are you so concerned about p$$ing him off!?!?  WHO CARES WHAT HE THINKS!!!!!!! I don't live my life worrying about what if I P$$ someone off when I'm doing nothing wrong. Do you think that they care about P$$ing you, or any of us off?

edge, It seems you are really concerned about what your neighbor thinks. I would suggest you don't hunt there. As far as hunting in a legal manner on land that does not belong to the neighbor. I really wouldn't worry about it to much. We are doing a legal activity, they can get mad all they want. There is just to much tip toeing around thinking we are in some way doing something wrong. They are the ones in the wrong. Hunting is a God given right even though F&W says its a privilege.:) Anyway they are the law which is OK. If this becomes law it will be a lawfull activity. Enjoy it.

RAF34,

I hunt in my neighbors barn for crying out loud! There is NOWHERE that I can't hunt because I asked for their permission and they agreed!
I hope it goes through for you guys that don't give a cr@p about their Property Owners Neighbors!

You see, I HIGHLY doubt that you ( generic you ) are hunting property that you actually OWN!

This means that you are hunting not next to YOUR neighbor, but really you are hunting next to the land owners neighbor!

P$$ off the land owners neighbor and I suspect that many of you will be looking for new property to hunt.

I could care less since it does not make any difference to me, BUT I have a great suggestion for you guys that think that I am wrong on this.

1) Go to your property owner and tell him up front that you are hunting where it will probably p$$ off HIS neighbor and you can give a rats a$$ if the neighbor gets mad;

2) Next time you are looking for new property to hunt and before you sign the lease advise this property owner of your RIGHT to do this!

Hey, it is YOUR right so everyone else be damned right?    BUT I BET YOU WON'T!!!

edge.

The Assembly version of the bill (A1683) made it out of committee by a vote of 5-0.  As usual, the anti's showed up armed with nothing but emotion....those who testified in support of the legislation brought facts....next up...full vote by the Seante and Assembly...then on to the Governor.....
