It seems the resident anti-crossbow organization in NJ (UBNJ) appears to have stepped in it! These holier than thou elitest have messed the bed while running one of their UBNJ hunts. I don't have all the info so maybe some NJ members can chime in. I have a soft spot in my heart for NJ because that is the one and only time I have been banned for my pro crossbow stance. The real issue here is not so much these elitest were fudging the numbers with "friends" only not ALLOWING all UBNJ members to hunt BUT they have ruined the public perciption on archers! This is the last thing that the hunters of NJ or (anywhere for that matter) needed! NOW anytime an archery hunt is proposed to control deer population the anti hunters will hold up the UBNJ (anti hunter/crossbow club) as a poster child! The UBNJ should be disbanded for what they have done to all hunters reguardless of weapon! And this is the same group that talked about "crossbow slob hunters"!! I did go to a NJ site to get some info but the UBNJ friendly Mods have buttoned this topic up tightly!!

Man who organized deer hunt on Garret Mountain charged with running illegal check station

The man who organized the controversial deer hunts at two county parks earlier this year has been charged with running an illegal deer check station during the cull.
Marc Weiss of the United Bowhunters of New Jersey, who organized the deer cull at Garret Mountain Reservation and Rifle Camp Park, is facing two counts of forgery and three counts of possession of deer without having them inspected at a deer check station according to Lawrence Ragonese, spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection.
Weiss surrendered July 6 to officials from the state Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife. He was processed at the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department’s Bureau of Law Enforcement in Wayne and released on his own recognizance. A court date is pending.
Hunters are required to bring deer they shoot to a deer-check station at which the state gathers data, including where and when the deer was killed, the deer's sex and number of its antler points. Ragonese said there are about 50 deer-check stations in North Jersey. Some of them are in sporting goods stores.
“We ask people to go through the proper channels when deer hunting — and he didn’t do that,” Ragonese said.
When reached by phone, Weiss declined to comment, and referred all questions to his lawyer, Evan Nappen. Nappen did not return calls for comment.
The Passaic County Board of Freeholders contracted the United Bowhunters to conduct the cull. The county agreed to pay the bowhunters $5,000 to run the operation and $100 for each deer to be processed. But the freeholders suspended it after about a month after criticism of the way the hunters handled the cull, whether or not all of the culled deer had been properly tagged and Weiss’ refusal to provide information to the public on the hunt. The state Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife later launched an investigation into the hunter’s tagging process. In all, about 50 deer were culled before the hunt was called off.
Keith Furlong, spokesman for the freeholders, said the county worked with various local and state authorities from the beginning to ensure that the cull was completed properly and legally.
“We applaud the efforts to bring that individual to justice,” he said.
Merrilee Cichy, co-founder of Keep Life in the Park, a wildlife advocacy group who opposed the deer cull, said the group wasn’t surprised about Weiss’ charges. She said that the entire process, from selecting the bowhunters to the cull itself, was flawed.
“This is perfect example of the people we don’t want running around with lethal weapons in our … county parks,” Cichy said.
my response to this was not to indict the UBNJ as a whole....any organization can have 'bad apples'....
honestly...I've seen their stance moderate on crossbows, as I think they've come to realize what was said all along....full inclusion was a non-event...there will always be bowhunters, UBNJ members and non-members alike, who do not like crossbows and will never give in.....

Over 50% of their membership did not oppose crossbow inclusion "per their own poll" but that did not stop the powers that be from opposing crossbows until the very end! Do they have a choice but to Moderate their position? Crossbows were tearing them apart they had no choice. Whoever did this just perpetuated the selfish, elitest sterotype of the bowhunter...This is not good for ANY hunters....The cover-up is in full swing at NJH!! A cover-up does no one any good!!

I agree...this nonsense that allegedly went on does none of us any good....regardless of what's going on with the posts on NJH....the responsible party(s) will be made to pay.....and I do remember what it was like before full inclusion in NJ...the battles that involved some members of the UBNJ...I've simply chosen to put that behind me and move on....I have some good friends that are UBNJ members still...and I'd not bad-mouth them simply because of one nitwit in the organization that they belong to....what makes this worse is that the person who got arrested is the one who organized the hunt in the first place...

just another corrupt government agency trying to charge someone for nothing to get back at them. tim is not from nj so he doesn't know what goes on with these people at the F+G, they pretty much suck and are corrupt and are liars. ubnj called them out on some lies so now they try to retaliate and go after the group and this was the only thing they could find, and as was proven, they made up the charges and had no basis or evidence so they had to be dropped. this was a disgraceful move by higher ups at F+G all for personal reasons and they are the trouble for nj hunters, not ubnj as tim says.
anyone from here with any knowledge of F+G or ubnj knows this is what happened.
