A few of you know me. I am a non-hunting woman who has always been pro hunting and I wanted to share my woods experience with you all. Saturday, was the season opener for early bow, here in NJ. My nephew, Jason, took me out in the woods with him to spend the day and share this special day with him. The following is my report of how it went.

I was up from the morning before, and couldn't sleep at all waiting for him to pick me up. He came a little earlier, picked me up at 3:30 AM. He drove down to his hunting club, and we got there a little before 5 AM. Saw other club members, along with a few other family members. We had a quick snack and all headed out to their spots.

Jason went out of his way to clear the trail into the woods to where he had his blind set up. He had 2 chairs in there and set up his digital camera on a tripod to catch some pics. Got his bow and arrow ready and we sat and waited. To his right he saw a buck and another buck coming in behind him. Both stopped and were looking in our direction. I couldn't see them, because of the angle and being way too dark. I did hear them snort--have never heard that sound before. Both turned back and took off. So, we waited some more. A lonely button buck came in. He was a nice size for a BB, and Jay was thinking about shooting him, but didn't. He did get the opportunity but, let him walk. Nothing else came in and we went back to the clubhouse a little before 9 AM.

Another nephew, Mike, joined us for breakfast. Drove to a nearby place. Food was good and we enjoyed spending that time together. That was around 10 AM. Headed back to the club and BS-ed with several members who were there. A lot more members started driving in as there was a meeting scheduled for 12:00. While the guys discussed their club business, I stayed outside and walked around until I found "1" spot where my cell phone got a signal and spent that hour talking with a friend. Sun was very hot, but had a nice long chat. After the meeting, I went inside and just hung out there with the others, as it was much cooler. Most of the members had only come for that meeting, so they had left.

About 3:45 PM, Jay and I decided we would head back into the woods. Sat and waited. It was very quiet except for the birds and a couple of squirrels around. Finally, a deer was coming in from a little different direction. That was around 5:15 PM. She looked to be a nice size and she was all alone. Jay would have to shoot a doe in order to earn a buck tag in that zone. He got his bow ready and I knew he was waiting for her to turn broadside. She did, and he let the broadhead fly. Went about 10 yds and I saw that he made a good lung shot. She jumped and ran about 90 feet away, where she died in a couple of mins. He checked his arrow, recovered the deer right away and dragged her out of that area. Gutted her at the club and we went to a check station, but they had closed. So, we stopped at a nearby store where he got ice and packed the cavity. We had a quick bite driving back up north. Jay called another place, much closer to home, to see if he could check the deer in there. Guy who has that place waited for us to get there and that was done.

By this time, Jay's truck needed gas, so he got that right before driving me home. This was around 10 PM. I had a great day. My experience will be one I will never forget. Thanks to Jason, for making this day a very good one. I enjoyed spending that special day with him. Am glad he filled his doe tag and I wish him good luck getting a buck, next time! :)

Glad that you had a good time.  I give you credit for being a non-hunter and hanging in there all day.  Those days can be long but oh so memorable!

Ha HA! That's how my hunting career began. As an observer. Now, they call me Frankenstein or Killer. You keep going along and someday you'll find yourself wanting to try it yourself, and then, you'll think of me, your friend, and say "She said this may happen". You go girl!

Thanks, and yes, very long day.   I haven't been up all day and night and then all day into the next night, with no sleep, in many years.  It will be a great memory, for sure.  :D

Thanks Wendy!  Who knows?  Not something I am really planning, and don't know if I'll even make it out there again, the way things stand, now, but I won't discount anything.  :D  If it does happen like that, I will be thinking about what you said.  :D

Let me tell you that I surely didn't plan on taking any animals life either, but at that time, a few things happened to make me change my thinking. Besides me finding a lost buck Butch had shot, it all had to do with a 100 mile long contract paper route. First was I kept totalling vehicles hitting deer and I realized there was a need to control the population. 5 vehicles in two years, not counting the horse I hit on a bridge in the fog. Next I would find deer that had been hit and were still alive with broken backs laying in the road, so I would silently take the tire tool and whack them to put them out of their misery and pain, as I didn't want the noise of gun shots. Then I thought, I can whack one with a tire tool, so why not be able to shoot one? It was because I would be crossing the line, purposely taking a deers life instead of simply stopping it from suffering.

Then, I got resentful of being left behind with the business and Butchs youngest daughter, while the rest of the family was going on great adventures to other places like Colorado, and visiting the casinos, etc. So I decided to "fake it" just to be able and go. After three days of sitting in the high grass and "faking it", I decided to not hide anymore and get to a big Oak tree with a branch I could use as a gun rest. Within 5 minutes of being there a buck walked out 40 yards, and I shot it! No tracking as it dropped and died instantly.

Our Mexican employees couldn't believe I shot a deer, me a woman, and asked for some of the meat. When I shared that meat, I was proud because they were so greatful for the meat. I wanted to do that again, but still had a problem with Bambi. I went though. Then one evening I found a large, nasty boar hog that chased me up a tree, and in the 4 hours I was there in the dark waiting for someone to miss me and come find me, I had alot of time to think. I thought if I EVER got out of that tree, I was going to kill every hog I could find. My mission was set! The rest followed suite. I was entered in a hunting contest with the rest of the family, and won a category, so that helped seal the deal. I was a hog hunter first and foremost. They still to this day tease me at hunting awards banquets by telling the audience "If there was a 180 class buck standing beside a 400 lb boar hog, the hog would hit the ground first". That's the truth too. I'll find the buck again later.
That's pretty much how it happened to me. Just so you know how it happens!

Wendy, pretty funny, "faking it".  :D  You sure have a flair for story-telling and adventures.  Enjoy reading about them.   That boar story is something.  Being trapped up a tree for 4 hrs. :hurray:  Good luck this year.    Looking forward to hearing more stories.  :D

Thanks, and you are right.  It's a whole week later, and I'm still "up" about having shared opening day with my fav nephew.   Spoke with him earlier today and even told him as much.   As he is a taxidermist, he was busy working on a coyote mount that he had donated as the prize for a yote/fox contest on one of the NJ sites, we both go on.  He's running a deer contest now and will be getting ready to do those mounts. :drool5:

You sound like a very cool lady , that hunt with your nephew met as much to him as it did you ,I guarantee it.
Keep it up you might get the bug. I was going to make a gun that takes pictures instead of shoots a long time ago for my mom because she loved to fish but she couldnt kill bambi and her being an outdoor person she would have loved it.
I take a camera with me because I cant possibly kill all the deer that present themselves.

woodmaster, thank you for those nice words.   So true, my nephew had a great day out there, also.   He's been hunting for 12 yrs, since he was 10 and is one of the 3rd generations of hunters in my family.  Jason is also a very good taxidermist and puts both passion and art into his work.   Since the day I was able to get out with him, he did tag out getting his 1st 8pt a couple weeks ago.   Only down side was that I couldn't be there to share that hunt with him, but I might get another chance during permit bow.  Next month, he is planning on taking me out for a goose hunt.   Not definite if I can go, yet, but hope I will be able to.  Will post that experience, if I do indeed get out there.

Don't know if I'll actually get the "bug" myself, but I won't rule it out, entirely.  My passion is target shooting with my handguns, although I don't get out as much as I would like.   Hoping to in the near future.  ;)
