Yup, shelled corn.
A mineral block with it helps a bit but the corn is the biggie.
Place 100lbs 15 to 20 yards from your stand 2 weeks before hunting it and check it every 2 to 3 days. Replace as needed. Once they get use to it being there they'll check all winter long. Scent lures only work to their best during the rut season. Mid to late winter they're all but useless.

If you look closely in this shot from my south ridge stand you'll see 3 does. Soon after I took this there were only 2!

Real doe P for the earlier season.
Apple scent made by Wildlife Research Center.
Both seem to keep deer calm.
I keep my hunting clothes in plastic bags with fresh earth scent wafers.

Trails End #7 does not alarm deer.
Acorn scents smell so good I spray that on my clothes and my blind. lol.

that might be the next thing they add on the list of the foolish laws. just give them a year or 2 and the dnr will come up with "scientific research" that shows this needs to be law, then maybe foodplots after that?:)

Jeff is dead right. IMO we have a telephone book of which many seem to be useless regulations. At the moment they are considering more including restricting shooting any bucks with less than 3 pts on one side, one buck all year, and earn a buck tag by shooting an anterless deer first. They are also considering moving deer seasons to start on Saturdays. I do not mind if some folks buy into all of the QDM stuff but I feel it should not be shoved down everyone's throat. It should be a choice but not a requirement. If food plots are banned, I wonder how happy the QDMers will be.

On another vein, (before I bust one) I wore my fawn and doe bleat call out. Just remembered about it by reading the above posts. Thanks for mentioning it. I always have to make a list of things that I forgot when I am in camp. . .and then I usually forget what I did with the list:eek:.

I ALMOST forgot! While I was hunting this weekend, I thought of this thread and remembered- the very best attractant and food source for all deer including exotic species is.........Alfalfa. Yep, it is the best. Once the deer find it, especially in the winter months, green alfalfa is deadly for them. It's like crack.
What we do is only put out a peice of a bale at a time. Then, we throw whole bales out but leave them whole. You have to watch the wire though once the bale starts getting loose. For Texans, this is the very best thing for Axis deer.
Oh yea, Alfalfa is also a medicinal plant. It's the only thing that contains the prized vitamin K which is great for arthritis and other ailments. Game ranches feed it to sick or hurt animals.

:iagree:

We do this every year and it will draw and hold the deer in the area.

I have had better than average success with Special Golden Estrous and a Tru Talker grunt call combo. But I only use them from Halloween on.
