If you have read my post in the 'get-acquainted' section you'll know that I'm not an experienced archery hunter. My first season hunting with a compound I was strictly a spot-n-stalk hunter for the mulies I grew up hunting with a rifle.

The best stalk I had across the wind swept Nebraska prairie had me walking about 1 & 1/2 mile to sneak around a group of 10 mulies (doe only permit). I had finally walked/snuck/crawled to within 63 yards (per range finder) of the closest doe in the group. I noticed that many times the old doe on watch had looked my direction and even stamped a couple of times. Pretty sure that I was busted I figured they would run off any second and I sure wasn't going to take a shot that far. Also in my g/a post you might remember I've had 5 back surgeries and 2 shoulder surgeries, so as you might have guessed I've done a bit more than I'm supposed to at this point. I know this next part will probably tic off a few people but instead of backing out and calling it a day I just stood up.

To my great surprise, the old lookout biddy just casually glanced my way and bent down for a few more mouthfuls of grass. Not one to pass on such a gift I draw my bow and begin taking slow steps toward the deer. Now most you will relate that in this type of situation the focus is incredibly intense on the prey. Thankful that I had my 'sneaky mocs' on I carefully proceeded towards the deer, hoping I'd be able to maintain the draw until I got in range. On my 6th step toward the deer......something hit my foot!!!

Now I'm a poor ole Nebraska country boy, so the first thing through my mind is...... RATTLER! I of course did the accepted rattler evasion technique by hovering 5 feet in the air. Here I get a little vague on what happened next as I'm not sure who was higher in the air, me, the deer, or the poor old sleepy coyote that I must have kicked awake in my best indian stalk!

That old coyote ticced me off pretty good and I let fly w/ a broadhead, coming close enough to give him a haircut (which I didn't know could happen) and losing my arrow in the process. As I finally limped back to my vehicle I see activity on a hillside a couple of miles away. Through my binoculars I watch as the deer chase the coyote over the hill and out of sight. By this time I could see the humor in the whole adventure and have empathize with that coyote he sure didn't have a good day either!

If it is going to go wrong, it will go wrong during a bow hunt. Great story.

I'm doing okay although this body I am in isn't doing so hot. But the Lord is giving me a new one, so why worry about it?

The Invisible Man ... LOL Yeah, every once in a while a deer will think you're invisible and look right through you. Usually, you don't have a weapon with you at the time. (part of the GF rules) We had it last night when we were trying to clear a deer out of some exclusive prize petunia gardens. Driver walked within 40 yards of the victim with no weapon ... while the guy with the gun sat in wait only about 75 yards away. Snakes?, coyotes, NBA vertical leap ... too funny!

Great story. Thought I was the only one to have days like that.
"A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, signed a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

You had me laughing on this one, I can imagine the whole situation. Then the thought of the coyote and road runner cartoon went through my head and made this more funny. Great story!!

I loved the story! That coyote is most likely 2 states away by now. He is probably wondering what he did to bring the whole neighborhood down on himself. You must be a pretty good shot to shave a yote on the move. I have shot at coyote and fox on the move and not come that close.
