The International Bowhunting Organization (IBO) World Championship was held in Ellicottville New York the weekend of August 12, 13 and 14. Archers from around the world would attend this three day event held on the ski slopes of the beautiful Holiday Valley Resort with the hopes of winning a prestigious world title. The tournament would consist of a two day competition with archers shooting twenty targets each day. The top five archers would then advance to a third day championship round consisting of ten targets for the World Championship title.
My father, having been with me for the last two national tournaments that I attended, agreed to also accompany me on each day of the World Championship. Each day we were required to ride the ski lift to the top of the mountain to prepare for our shoot. Our group of archers were assigned and after an anxious waiting period we were on our way to begin the competition. This tournament was much harder than the previous two national tournaments I had competed in and won. The targets were placed much further away making range estimation very critical and the footing for each shot due to the steep terrain was extremely awkward. I managed to finish the two day event with a score of 402 and 19 x rings of forty targets giving me first place going into the third day championship round leading by only one point. Day three proved to be an even tougher course. Having to shoot with four other veteran top shooters in the world including my buddy and mentor, the 2009 defending World Champion, Kenny Barr didn't help the stress level. Target after target we all took our turn shooting at the long range three dimensional animal targets that were place in low light areas on the mountain side. My final score for the championship round of ten targets was 98 points with 2 x rings giving me a single point lead to win the 2010 IBO World Championship title with a score of an even 500 with 21 x rings out of a total of fifty targets. I would like to thank my family (especially my father) for traveling with me and being by my side for each of the events this year, Kenny Barr for being a great friend and for all of his help and support and Roy Meditz for his attempts at keeping me focused during this tournament, I know that's not an easy thing to do, thank you Roy.
