Urban Coyote

Early this morning very cold, went to a friends place that raises chickens for the Perdue brand, Arriving before daylight .Earlier in the week he called and said a Coyote was hanging out in the back of the property near a pond with cut timber piled up. I set up near the back of a long barn with the wind in my face, and a view of the pond area about 100 yards away. I started calling using an electronic hand call utilizing a coyote challenge howl. After about 20 minutes as I scanned the pond area with my green LED Bowlite I see eyes. The coyote starts coming toward me in a back and forth slow crotched approach. At about forty yards the coyote drops down and starts crawling .I can not get a good shot at this time because all I can see is eyes. At 20 yards the coyote stops and turns figuring something is not right. As the coyote runs toward the pond,I yelled very loud, Hey,as the coyote turns to look back he catches an arrow with a slick trick mag in the chest from my Tenpoint Turbo, does a back flip and the young male and is done. Really like this coyote hunting, this is number seventeen since started hunting them with my crossbow last year.

Coyote excitment 2012

25 January 2012 - 03:37 PM

It is Midnight on my first coyote hunt of 2012, as I cautiously make my way along the creek bank to the area where earlier this evening the Coyotes were howling .The Temperature is 23 degrees and the gusting twenty five MPH wind in my face is telling me, turn around, warm camper. Upon arrival at my makeshift blind, actually bushes piled up with hole in the middle, it is difficult to get comfortable in the cold wind.
After settling down for a few minutes I use the injured rabbit mouth call about every 4 minutes for about a half hour, no response heard or observed.
At this time a major decision for comfort is made, pack up and move about 100 yards to an old ground blind, again get settled in and listen, yes I hear what sounds like two or more coyotes barking about a half mile down the creek. For the next 20 minutes I call using the Coyote challenge howl, Suddenly, ten yards behind me a loud growl , oh yes, got the heart pumping. I try to turn around, shine the green Bowlite LED toward the sound, but cannot see any thing because of reflection from brush and the blind.
I then hear a very loud howl to the left of my blind, scanning through the opening with the light on my crossbow I see Eyes glowing, and a large shape of a really big coyote not 10 yards away. As you might guess, at this point I am not real calm.
I take quick aim and fire, and the arrow clears the coyote by maybe an inch, Darn, missed my chance on a big Coyote. As I set in the darkness, and then reload my Tenpoint Turbo crossbow, I am thinking that coyote must have thought there is a strange coyote in that box .
At this time seems like the thing to do is call it a night and head for the warm camper. For the next few minutes I scan the area with the bowlite.
Then out of the front of the blind while scanning the area with thick brush, much to my amazement, glowing eyes, oh yes, about 35 yards out, just setting there looking at me.
I take careful aim with my crossbow scope using just the halo of the green light so as not to scare off this predator. At the shot I hear the loud swack of the arrow and the Slicktrick mag broadhead, and the Coyote disappears in the darkness. I take several deep breathes, and a large drink of water to try to calm down, my hands are shaking and seems like I cant get enough of the cold air.
After a minute or two, exit the blind and begin looking for the Coyote, after a short grid search there is the Coyote, A big one, a female, but I really believe this was a different Coyote then the one seen very close to the blind and shot at and missed.
As a hunter I have always believed every animal taken is a story that will always be there in your mind, I know for sure, this hunt will be remembered.

Coyote hunting tips

23 January 2012 - 04:39 AM

Hi Guys, specialized here, I thought I would share a little coyote hunting secret with the members,
who hunt or have thought about hunting Coyotes, especially at night. As many of
you know, I really enjoy hunting Coyotes with my crossbow, so therefore I am always
looking for new ideas.
My favorite way of hunting Coyotes is calling them in at night, using my Bowlite
for scanning the darkness and sighting my crossbow, and my mouth caller that
sounds like a rabbit in distress. Some times I set up my little mechanical bunny
look a like with battery powered motion, about 30 yards from where I am concealed
in the brush. The Bunny distracts the Coyote away from me as he responds
to my call, and has been viciously attacked several times. Some times a
Coyote will not respond to the call even though you know they are in the area you
are hunting for some reason or another. Well I have found a little trick that works
pretty often. Again we are night hunting Coyotes.
First, find a area that is fairly open where you know there are coyotes in the vicinity.
Look for a small tree that has limbs 5 or 6 feet from the ground, Take several
cans of cheap tuna, open and pour the tuna into two or three old socks, then hang
the tuna filled socks from the tree limbs. Place a cheap very small motion detector
light directly under the socks, then conceal your self nearby, approximately twenty
or thirty yards away with the wind in your favor.
Prepare your self for a wait of usually an hour or sometimes less. During the wait I
usually use another mouth call that sounds like Coyote or Raccoon pups. When
you hear the sounds of the coyote or see the small motion detecting light you
placed blink. Aim your crossbow in the area below the hanging socks, flip on your
bow mounted Bowlite, zero in on the
Coyotes kill zone and let fly the arrow.
If there are more than one coyote
around the Tuna baited area, after
your successful shot, set tight, many
times the other coyotes will return to
the are, providing more opportunities
for shots.
I have used this method and
found it works for me, something
about the Tuna, the
coyote can not resist, maybe
the smell, lol, try it, might just
work for you.

Remember When crossbow hunting at night, there are many more things to remember, you cant see obstacles like a tree branch, twigs, brush or even a wire fence. Any obstacles can interrupt your arrow flight causing you to miss. A clear shooting lane is a must. And you've got to recognize what you're shooting at, the position of your predator, and how far the target is from you. Most crossbow hunters judge distance pretty good during the day, you may be very good at it, but when you judge distance at night, it's completely different. For many, 30 yards looks like 60, and 40 looks like a football field in distance. In the dark, everything looks further away than it really is.So before you head out, You really need much practice to become proficient at shooting an arrow in the dark. Coyote hunting with crossbow in the dark is a high seldom experienced with any other hunting, and once you have taken a coyote up close with your crossbow, you are hooked.
