Bolt velocity at distance?

875 Views 10 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Djfan
I haven't been able to find any info on the velocity of bolts in my Sniper 370 at distance. Does anyone know how I can come by that? My goal is to be able to shoot as far as I can, but I want it to be a lethal shot.

Any help would be great. Thanks!

Wow! That's excellent. Thanks!!!
I've been searching for this info for a longer time than I expected - what grain are these bolts with field tips? Wolverine Crossbolt 20"? I can't find it anywhere, and the calculator in the link above needs that info.

Thanks everyone. Still a crossbow rookie.

OK. Found it. That site is amazing! Appreciate the link.

Please disregard my last post. I got distracted, and wasn't able to finish.
How far are you wanting to shoot?

No worries. I want to shoot as far as is practical. Not trying to give a lame answer, but I bought the crossbow because I heard that they shoot further with lethal energy than my compound bow could.

I took it out when I got it and shot 50 yards no problem. Looking to see how far that is a reality.
So, you wanted to extend your range? What range did you shoot your vertical? Most hunters on this site won't shoot over 35-40 yards max at a live animal. Good advice. You owe it to the animal to make a quick clean kill.
According to your first post, you bought a crossbow so you could shoot farther. Well, what did you consider your maximum range to be with the vertical? What arrows are you using in your Sniper? Shooting at pie plates, or dots?
What size groups at 50yards?
Need more information.
I know that I owe it to the animal. That is why I am trying to find the effective range.

I have comfort with my compound to shoot about 50 yards, maybe a bit more. I already have that with my crossbow. So, I'm trying to find out if that is appropriate for hunting.

Simple
Okay. Got your drift. Effective range? A little further than your compound. Ethical range? Your choice.
Having shot in competition for over 25 yrs. out to ranges of 100yrds and more with my compounds, I still limit myself on live animals to 40yrds. and under out of respect for the game.

I appreciate the info. I live in Wyoming. 40 yard shots are not as common as they are in other areas. Most of our archery ranges go out to 50 or 60 yards. I know people who shoot compound bows out that far and more. I have no problem taking a 50 yard shot with my compound if it is a legit shot.

I'm hoping for more with my compound bow.
