Broadhead Issues

I have been mentoring a new xbow hunter for the past 3 months. He wasn't sure if he would like deer hunting but now has the bug.

We got him a inexpensive Centerpoint Amp 415,on his own he bought Carbon Express pile driver arrows. I wasn't happy with that choice, I would have gotten the BEE's

So we put on a ATN 4K IR scope, sort of big and front heavy. But out of my 390SL I had no issues with it.

For some reason I cant get arrows to fly straight. So I grabbed my hunting arrows and put field tips on and they zeroed in just fine.

The issue is when I put my 125 Grizztrick on I dont get the consistency. So I have boiled it down to the Kid needs new BEE arrows and a different BH.

Anyone have a opinions on a not so radical broadhead for this new bowhunter. The Grizz works fine for my Solution 390 out to 60 yards. But isnt working well for the 415Amp.

I had the same issue with the Piledrivers. It would not shoot my montecs accurate past 40yards. My friend was standing behind me and he could see the arrows corkscrew in flight. The foc with the 100gr. Montec was terrible and I think that was the problem because when I upped the point weight it shot perfectly well. Buy better arrows.

I'm give'n up on fixed heads. Gonna try the well reviewed TruGlo Titanium X 4 blade mechanical! From all that I'm hearing, they open reliably, create massive 1.75" holes, are very reusable AND fly like FPs!

Use what works best for you, but don't drop fix blade broadheads without experimenting with 4-inch vanes and greater foc. What worked for me was brass inserts 100gr. With fixblades of 125gr. Or 150gr. Broadheads.

It's also about bigger holes, man. More carnage!!! :D I've always shied away from mechanicals, but they sound very reliable now!!! One guy shot 8 bucks with the same TruGlo!!!
4" vanes and 150 gr BHs is not quite the direction I'm head'n either...if I gotta use that much weight to stabilize the suckers....

Who wants my Bolt Cutters!!? ;)

To each his own. Bigger holes don't put them down faster, that is if your arrow hit them in the vitals. But that is just my opinion. I've shot game with 2 blades with only a slit on entry and exit and animals went down within 60yards. Blood trial is good enough for me to follow. It's a personal choice shoot whatever works for you. I prefer entry and exit and a broadhead I can use more than once, I also like heavy arrows and don't care much for speed.

Fixed? I'd try Slick Trick Standards or Ramcats. QAD Exodus too, I guess, though I've never used them. I've had shorter recoveries from hit site with fixed, though there are any number of other reasons why (deer attitude, etc.), and my kills are a very small sample size. I do like the Truglos, but they have too much exposed blade in flight to be considered any slam dunk as far as good flight goes. I think the guy needs much better arrows.

Look at this slow setup The problem was not finding the pig, it took longer to search for the arrow after passing thru it.

LOL! You're talk'n to a guy that took my Stone ram at 470 yds with a 25-06, loaded for high velocity with RL 17 (1 gr bellow max!), and push'n a 92 gr Hammer Hunter pill close to a beautiful 3,400 + FPS!!! :D Bang... flop!

Sorry! ,Back to the OP topic now!
Must be arrow issues also. The Tapps sure sound like gooders!!! I think I'm head'n that direction also!!

and I'm a guy that loves my Marlin lever action 45-70 Gov 300gr @ 1900fps.

Sorry, bowman for going off the topic. My vote is for better arrows.

I had the same issue with the Piledrivers.
Are they spine indexed?
Are there really any off the shelf pointy sticks as deadly accurate as Jerry's? Just put'n it out there...

If they are straight, indexed, squared end to end, with quality inserts properly installed, properly fletched and offset with a wrap that says Spynal Tapp, you're darn right.;) Otherwise, buy some of Jerry's other offerings. :D Put my order in for another 1/2 dozen with 200 gr SS inserts yesterday. Season ends here in MD at end of January. Had to pass on three does this morning out of range.

No, no they are not. But they also have a very week spine if I compare them to the arrows I use now. I won't buy them again.

I concur with your arrow decision, bowmanmt. I'm familiar with the bow and would get the arrow weight up around 350 grains with BEE's or Centerpunch arrows, and then opt for 125 grain broadheads. For a great flying fixed blade head I highly recommend the Magnus Black Hornets. Good luck!

I've found that RamCat Hydroshocks fly the best of any fixed blades I've tried at high speeds.
