With hunting season in full swing, we thought it would be fun to look back at the fastest crossbows available in 2017.

This doesn't mean these are the best crossbows or the most accurate crossbows – we are looking at manufacturer-advertised rated speed and nothing else.

Scorpyd Aculeus 450


The Scorpyd Aculeus 450 is the clear winner on this list with a rated speed of 450 feet per second (FPS). To achieve this speed, the Aculeus has a draw weight of 175 pounds and a massive power stroke of 18.5 inches. Other specs include kinetic energy of 172 lb-ft, axle-to-axle width of 12.875 inches (cocked), length of 34.5 inches and mass weight of 7.5 pounds. Scorpyd also takes the second and third spots on our list with the VTEC and Ventilator crossbows, each capable of reaching a blistering 440 FPS (172 lb-ft kinetic energy). The VTEC has a draw weight of 175 pounds, power stroke of 18.75 inches, axle-to-axle width of 15.875 inches (cocked), length of 35.5 inches and a mass weight of 8.4 pounds.

The Ventilator has a draw weight of 175 pounds,  power stroke of 18.5 inches, axle-to-axle width of 12.75 inches (cocked), length of 35.5 inches and mass weight of 8.1 pounds. Ravin R15


The most unique addition to our list of the fastest crossbows of 2017 is the Ravin R15. Boasting speeds up to 425 feet per second (160 lb-ft kinetic energy), the Ravin R15 is amazingly compact with an axle-to-axle width of just 6 inches when cocked (10.5 inches un-cocked). The R15 has a power stroke of 13 inches, is 34.5 inches long and has a mass weight of 6.9 pounds. It comes in a kit that includes a built-in cocking mechanism and retails for $2,049. Barnett Ghost 420


Next up is the Barnett Ghost 420, which produces up to 420 FPS (153 lb-ft kinetic energy). This crossbow has a draw weight of 185 pounds and a power stroke of 15.375 inches.  Other specs include an axle-to-axle width of 20.125 inches, length of 37.4 inches and mass weight of 7.5 pounds. Middleton 415SS


The final addition to our list of the fastest crossbows of 2017 is the Middleton 415SS. What makes this crossbow unique is that it is the only recurve on our list. The Middleton 415SS offers up a top speed of 415 FPS (134 lb-ft kinetic energy) using a short 12-inch power stroke and 295-pound draw weight.
