LOL ... "Not talking about in the west?" Do ethics somehow mutate once you cross the Mississippi??? Do lousy shooters from down east somehow transform into so may William Tells once they get to Wyoming? o_O Why would a hundred yard shot in Connecticut be terrible but a guy taking the same shot in Oklahoma is okay with you? I don't follow the logic.

As always Duke, well stated.
To add to that statement why are people weighing in on the natural inborn freedoms of others? I may not choose to take a shot at an animal or a target over a certain distance under less than ideal circumstances, but that’s my prerogative as an adult. What I have no tolerance for is other people who would try to affect my right to make those choices.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If you were "penalized" in some way for wounding and not recovering your game, HOW FAR WOULD YOU SHOOT?
That's why there is a thing called wounding fees among trophy hunters.
Makes ... perfect sense. But "sport" hunting is about challenges. The greater the challenge the more possibility of less-than-ideal results. It's an honor system. Each hunter is supposed to know his limitations. But, who ever gets better without leaving his comfort zone? Now "trophy fees" and "wounding fees" are predicated on those animals having monetary value. Wound a $5,000.00 animal and it's costing that outfitter $5,000.00 for an animal his next client/hunter would be paying for. 99% of hunting is just the cost of your license. A guy with equipment and experience to 50 yards takes a 60 yard shot. Is he unethical? Or, just stretching his skill to the next distance? I understand your point because I have "wounding fees" in most of the hunting I do. The fee is a possible media debacle. I haven't shot a deer passed 45 yards in about 5 years now...lol I HAVE shot them passed 100 yards ... with a rifle. :p ;)

I'm just putting things in perspective. Asking a guy the question puts realistic limits on it. I don't see anyone answering the question. LOL
Ethics is subjective. A lot of things we turn up our noses to is practiced in lots of places around the world. Would we look fondly on motoring up to an animal swimming and shooting it in the head? That's what Native Alaskans do. Our lifestyles make things "unethical" because we can. Lots of "stupid" stuff. It's not ethical to shoot a running deer but unethical to shoot at a game bird while sitting on the ground. You make it fly and shoot it in the air. I can go on and on. Who makes this stuff up?
What has changed hunting is that it's mostly for "sport" now, not for food.

Ifyouve ever hunted out there, the shots are generally far. Maybe it was just the area iwas in but here in pa there is so much more brush and stuff

This one will never be settled, especially now with 500 fps whiz bang crossbows (and faster ones likely coming) getting so much attention. I expect 600 fps is being worked on now. For me, no thanks.
Yeah, its jst getting insane. Like are they trying to go through three hippos, a giraffe, and a few hyenas?

I think i answered the question of getting fined for wounding game the last time you ask. But maybe not :). My max distance is 60 yards. I know my abilities and the bows abilities and i have been killing deer with a sharp stick for 47 years. I put the cost of guilt for wounding a deer above what money might go out of my pocket. But i'd probably put a few hunters in the nervous hospital watching me wait on a good shot.

I understand your point and don't disagree with you. Most of my shots are in the 30ish to 40 ish yard range.

But yeah if that $5000 Buck was standing out there at 60 yards. I was in my blind with my rest and ranged him and dialed the yardage on the optimiser. Id drop the string on him in a heartbeat.

IMO as speed increases so does distance .
100 may be pushing it but with a 505 60 yds is like a chip shot .
This goes straight to a point i have tried to make countless times.

When i was hunting with a Traditional bow no sights no trigger no scope no rest. That only shot 180 fps was how fast my favorite bow shot. I kill a deer at 30 yards and i couldn't haul the attaboys in the bed of my truck.

But shoot a Deer at 60 yards with a crossbow. I couldn't even come close to the accuracy i have at 100 yards now using the trad bow at 20 yards. And 200 fps faster in my case than my trad bow. And i might get raked over the coals lol. Not to even bring up i'm using from a 3" to 3 3/4" cutting broadhead vs a 1" cut with the trad bow.

Yeah hes history at 60 and if i had a 505 that shot good.... well i better hush :).

I agree this will never be settle for reasons outlined above.

There are so many factors that have a greater affect on arrows than bullets that I’d hesitate to call 100 a chip shot since all of the afore mentioned conditions have to be weighted by the shooter, and every dhooter really only answers to themselves. A friend and I hope to get our antelope hunt in the end of September. They repeatedly state to be ready for 60y, and if you draw blood, you’ve filled your tag regardless of recovery. I guess that would be a wound fee…
