I have to admit that I was going to reply with a post that my mind kept saying "Don't Do It ". I might get booted from CN. I will just leave it at, that when you were originally 20, a woman was a woman.  :censored:

To tell you all the truth, when I was twenty, I thought more about bowhunting then women. Now at my age, bowhunting is all I can think about. ;)
When I had "that" talk with my boy, I finished by telling him to pick one he liked and we'd take her in to our Dr. for a pre-inspection to make sure she didn't originally come from the factory with a power antenna.

Well......someone hadta say it! And its tame compared to some of the stuff I've said here. Fahmah calls em as he sees em.

No "normal" crossbow hunter shoots animals at 100 yards. For fun, you can shoot from any distance.,.
Duke makes a great point, pronghorn and bighorn sheep are two of many examples of why hunts with a bow that typically require long shots

My second point are bows lethal at 100 yards? Absolutely there is more data than could be posted in a week on this subject

One example was actually an accident. Fred bear was hunting a huge Bengal tiger. It was positioned where he needed to to move closer so it would be in trad bow range

So is shot an arrow to scare it but the arrow hit something which deflected it. The arrow hit and killed the tiger. Fred shot a 60 to 65# trad bow

So yes bows are lethal at long range!

How about accuracy, first rifles.

I have read articles talking about if a rifle can produce 2.5 in to 4.5 in groups at 100 yards it will produce xxx at 300 yards

We know there is countless data that support crossbow accuracy of 100 yards of 1in grouping

The fact is in the right situation crossbows are as ethical at 100 yards as a rifle

I'm not advocating 100 yard shots as a norm. I'm saying if there is a need and the hunter is qualified then it's ethical. It's not my place to establish a zone and put every hunter in that zone.

Something that always comes to mind for me when the shot distance subject comes up is what about a follow up shot? Say you take a shot at 40yds and its not good, the wounded deer runs only to reappear at 100yds and offers you a perfect broadside shot. If you are confident you can hit it at 100yds would you try to take that shot and finish the job?
Just spitballin..

Yes! No question about it. Fact is it would be unethical not too

The problem with humans is we are judgemental.
The Ford guys and Chevy guys, politics even things like this forum, the bow you shoot, the pro shop you buy from. If it not in our group it's wrong.

Every body and every opinion counts.

Absolutely nothing wrong with debate as long as all sides are respectful.

I would think that if I just screwed up a 40 yard shot my confidence in a 100 is gonna be shaken. 45 yards in the woods sure looks a lot farther then it does in my back yard.
That’s a good point. Where I hunt in my treestand there is a lane directly in front of me where there is nothing for 70 yds. To my right there is trees where I shot my buck this past season at 47 yds. Which doesn’t look very far. But in front of me in the clearing 47 looks a lot farther. I’ve ranged 100 yds from my stand and it’s deceiving how far it looks. Personally I won’t shoot at a deer past 50, 60 yds. Maybe if it was my sole source of meat and I depended on it. When I hunt my peace starts the moment I arrive at my spot. Sitting in my stand, sipping on coffee and listening to nature completely relaxes me. During my sit I range all around me then do it every 20 min or so to be sure.

I worked on a dairy farm for 10 yrs starting at age 16 I was milking cows and doing all the grunt work .
I loved it !!!!!
I was pretty much the opposite. I worked making hay the summer of my freshman year in high school. Didn’t take me long to realize there had to be an easier way to earn cash. The following year I got a job with with a lawn care contractor and worked summers for him until i graduated.

It was hay. I think we were paid 50 cents an hour back then in 1964.
Guys,
I was right there with you on the hay baling in my early and mid teens. In those days we were stacking 40 lb. bales, at least when they were dry they were supposed to be 40 lb. bales. I was all of 80 - 85 lbs. soaking wet. The problem as I'm sure you're aware was when you start out your moving bales from back to front in the wagon, but as each row fills in you must keep throwing them higher and higher as you become more fatigued. We stacked ten layers high per load. Once finished the bale were moved into the barn where you started out stacking them at lw height and ended up throwing them upwards before you were finished. My grandparents would lend myself and my brother out to nearby family or friends that needed the help, so we were working for Fizzee's and no money. In the event you don't know what Fizzee's were they were round tablets of different flavors you could drop into a glass of water to flavor it in different flavors. We used to play a game where we'd take 3 or 4 of the tablets and compete to see if we could keep our mouths shut when the tablets would foam up and cause your mouth to burst open. It looked like a dog foaming at the mouth from rabies if you can imagine it.

It's tough work even if you're getting paid for it. Think about working for hours lifting and throwing half your body weigh with each bale.

Here is a pic of me throwing up another bail to my friend as we worked our summer job. Pretty sure I was 14 in this pic taken from an old local newspaper that his sister found and sent me a copy of recently.
I totally agree with SEW in his post above.

As a young boy around 14 I started help a neighbor load, transport then store hay in his barn every year until ibwas well in my high 20s. I would actually turn down holiday 2.5x to do hay every thangiving

There was no way I was going to miss that fun. And his mother in law was from Poland and she provided lunch. How do you miss food like that

Is it a good idea to take shots at 100 yards? Probably not. Do I want to establish some kind of 'distance police' & tell people they can't? No. What if the person I'm telling that to has killed a dozen animals at 100 yards with a bow? Who am I (or anybody) to say that is wrong?

Success is hard to argue with.

I'm certainly a fan of getting as close as possible, but sometimes that isn't all that close. Let the animal go or try the shot you have practiced for?

You decide - many times advice should be listened to, but sometimes it shouldn't.

Not in person no. Im new to xbow, this will be my first season with one. I was a trad guy before my car wreck and coma. The only way i can get out in the woods now is the xbow, i did attempt compound verticals but i didnt care for them and the local shop here only carries micro excals so i have a blackhawk 360. I am 29 if that matters
You will be impressed.

It appears to me, and I’m sure Duke plus others, that you need some serious counseling.😊

Counseling is expensive, spend a month talking to someone that doe nothing or have entire hunting setup complete AND a mount(s)

I get ... the Archie Bunker cooking and cleaning perspective since there's still a lot of that around. Although with automated dishwashers, advanced washers & driers, computerized ovens, big microwaves, iRobot vacuums & robot Braava mops it's not that as big a deal as some Archie's make it out to be.;) The one I can't wrap my mind around is that sex isn't great 9 out of ten times??? I was reminiscing about sex just the other day and just for giggles figured I've had it somewhere between 15,000 and 20,000 times. Gospel truth, I can't remember any time when it wasn't simply fabulous. Good, better and best. I gotta think it's a sorry situation not thinking otherwise 9 out of ten times.
