Question for ...all you guys with an aversion to heavy gear. I'm looking for a very light weight, smaller framed scope anywhere from a higher end 3-9x to something like a Swarovski Z5 3.5-18×44 @ 15.9oz but it's 14" long. Normally I don't give a hoot about size, just performance.

Any suggestions?

I have a Leupold VX3-HD 3.5-10 on my Mission that is lightweight at around 15 oz, and they have models even lighter.

I just went through some serious scope shopping for a rifle. Didn’t really look at price, just the specs. For the size/weight with excellent glass it’s hard to beat the Leupold VX3 or VX5. Add in the cost and it’s that much better. Ended up with the VX3 3.5x10x50 twilight hunter, the light transmission is amazing. Seems like most of the high end European scopes were 5-10 oz heavier with a larger price tag.

Duke,
If you’re keeping weight and size down, the Leupold Mark3HD 3-9x40 Firedot(15.8oz/12.7”) or Trijicon Accupoint 3-9x40(13.4oz/12.4”) are probably going to best meet the requirements. Anything else I can think of would be lower quality glass, fragile, or longer and heavier.

I normally ... don't like Leupold products but that VX3 seems to get a lot of good press. I assume the VX5 is even better? Years back I was killing deer out by Pittsburgh, PA with a guy who had a wildlife control company from Virginia. He had a 3.5-18x Leupold scope with a single illuminated dot that was extremely impressive. He had money and I'm not sure of the model. It wasn't small though.

Yes, I have Leupold VX-3HD's and VX-5HD's...10 total all with Fire Dot, also have/had Zeiss, Swarovski, Leica, and many others. Glass is significantly better on the VX-5HD's than the VX-3HD's. VX-5HD's and VX-6HD's have the same glass, but the VX-6HD's have more features...alumina flip up caps, throw levers, built in electronic levels, etc. In the Leupold line of scopes, the biggest jump in glass quality is between the VX-3HD and the VX-5HD. Of course, the VX-5HD's cost considerably more also. Very simple regarding glass quality...if you can't see the difference, don't pay it!;)

The Leupold is lighter and and shorter than the comparable European models. I went with the VX-3HD because I wanted a German no. 4 type reticle. The VX-5‘s didn’t have it. You may want to indicate what you consider “small”.

Hog hunted today with my Tikka 7mm rem mag topped with a VX-5 HD, 3-15x44. Fantastic scope. And very light compared to others in its class. Highly recommended.

Leupold will add a German #4 to scopes that don't have it. I know, I sent one in a few years back and they changed it out for me. Cost was about $90, if I remember right. Just FYI

I have been very happy with my Vortex 3-15 Razor. I can’t recall the weight, but it is light enough for my purposes. I have often thought about an Aimpoint T-2 red dot with an Aimpoint 6x magnifier. It would literally be a bomb proof setup, although starting to get on the pricey side. Right now my MV-36 has been my kid’a choice for hunting. I killed my buck and doe with it.

The Leupold VX 5 with similar specs as above will cost you 4oz only giving you 1/2 in lenght. It is about 2/3 cheaper though… That’s light for a European scope. When I said I didn’t give much regard to price,I lied, I didn’t really look at any scope over 2K. ”For the price” it’s hard to beat the VX-3/VX-5 Leupold for clarity, size and weight. I am very impressed with the light gathering ability of the VX-3HD Twilight Hunter.

Agreed. I have 2 of the VX-3HD's 3.5-10X 50mm with Firedot Twilight Hunter reticles...really nice scopes for the money! Also true about the European scopes generally being long and heavy. The Leica Amplus 6 2.5-15x 50mm illuminated L-4a that I had was long and heavy, but probably the best scope that I have ever looked through.

Almost bought the Lieca but the length/weight drove me to the Leupold.

Vortex Razor 42mm, 3x15 2FP - 19.1 oz. 50 mm - 20.5 oz. Comparatively light.
I was running ... a Vortex 3-15x44mm PST Gen2 illuminated on my Scorpyd for years. Loved it. It's now on my 12ga Winchester SX4 slug-gun.
