Suggestions for a crossbow for my dad

1796 Views 38 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  KTownKiller
I will be purchasing my dad a crossbow this offseason due to being unable to pull back a vertical bow anymore. The shop that I buy all my gear from only carries ten point. I know absolutely nothing about crossbows. I would like it to have a frank style cocking device. Looking to keep it to under $1,000. Thanks.

That's open'n the can of wrigglers!! LOL

Of course, my vote has to be spelled out since you're new here, and welcome, BTW!!! Check out the new SwatXP!! Coming out this June, I've heard say. List coin at $999.
At a thousand dollar budget ,there are quite a few bows at that price.
My advice would be to shoot as many as you can.
Does your dad need a crank?
What style of hunting? Stand, blind or stalk?
Can he do his own maintenance?
The new shorter, heavy poundage bows are harder on serving and cables.
Is your shop good with maintenance on bows?
Also the need for a press if you do your own work comes in to play.
If your dad is a guy who just likes to hunt with no maintenance and the ability to change/adjust the bow on his own, then I would suggest an Excalibur or a Scorpyd 420.Also the new Swat coming out this year is supposed to be super easy on serving and cables.
As I said there are a lot of bows under the thousand dollar mark.
The classifieds on here are going to be flooded with great bows soon as many upgrade to the latest and greatest.
Tree stand / ground hunting in SW PA. Will need some type of crank for drawing the xbow. Looking for something reliable with low maintenance.
Wicked ridge invader 400 $569.00, same company as tenpoint. They will carry and service it.
Low maintenance? Might look for Excalibur.

Take a look at the Wicked Ridge M-370. This xbow might be the sleeper "hunters special" of the TenPoint lineup this year. Very narrow (good), light, fast enough and it has a good frank system. ;)

New for 2020 and leveraging TenPoint's narrow limb technology, this lightweight platform will make for a nice hunter's xbow. Include the ACUdraw crank, upgraded RangeMaster Pro scope, good arrows, a nice target, good xbow rated broadheads, string and rail lube and some BowJax limb silencers and you will be close to $1,000. Most importantly, your father will have 99.9% of what he needs to start his xbow experience.

If your TenPoint dealer can't make that happen affordably, like TCG suggests above, call Dave Wyvern at Wyvern Creations.

Can you pull up a side by side comparison between the370 and the invader 400 and print it. (technology limited) :(
Here we go!,....But, the Swat measures a scant 27" long!!!! Just say'n.

But that doesn't look too bad, Rich!! For a distant second placer!!! ;) Hehehe
Invader Is wider but only weighs 6lb. 370 5.8 lb. Invader 15 inches wide cocked, 370 9.5. I will take the 15 and the 30 fps. Also has crank. Both good looking xbows.

Sure and I'm going to add the top of the WR line as well. The RDX 400, which I'm a fan of...

Short and narrow are the trending high value characteristics of modern crossbows. Add the RDX design and this RDX400 is a bargain!

Arrow weight. The xx75 aluminum are 435 gn and the ProLite carbons are 370 gn.

They are not rated with same weight arrows? And which one is shooting which? Cuz if that invader is shooting a 435 gn arrow 400 fps I am impressed.
So T, you only want to buy Tenpoint? Or you just want something that can be crank cocked?
