The Referee

Was going through the card and came across a sequence with two smaller bucks head butting and pushing on the edge of a cut corn field. More a pecking order match than any thing because there were no does around. They went round and round for ten or fifteen frames when a bigger buck showed up to referee the event.

After watching a few minutes he stepped in to separate the two rivals and offer some advise. With his size, probably some sound words of wisdom.

Then a personal one on one to answer any questions about technique or just to clear up who was the biggest.

Very Nice! That is one big buck
He is easily a 300 pounder. Very unique rack and it is larger than it looks with a body that large. Here is a side shot of him from last night.

Missouri has a surprising number of bucks that size, some larger. Many are in urban areas. They learn how to avoid people and are largely nocturnal, even in the rut. The trail cam that got the pictures is located only 100 yards behind my house. I also have a stand in the large Oak right next to the trail cam.

One of the best times to hunt these urban giants is after the rut has wound down and they return to their home turf. Still highly nocturnal, they get back on a pattern of feeding and as December progresses begin to press both ends of daylight. Last year I had night time pictures of a huge 9 point from June through late October.

He totally vanished during the rut and didn't show back up until late November. Having already taken a nice 10 point this guy was number 1 on my hit list.

As it got closer to Christmas he began to show up each day and was closer and closer to daylight.

Anytime the wind was right I spent the afternoon in that stand behind the house. Finally, on December 22 with 20 minutes of legal shooting time left he showed up and my Matrix introduced him to a 2219.
