VANES ** What’s the best or are they all really the same**

What vanes is everyone using and why. I’ve only used Bohning Blazers and Bohning Bolts out of the Excalibur’s and could not really tell any difference between them.
I’ve never had any issues with the Blazers. What’s are custom arrow builders using and why? Has anyone done any vane testing and what were your results?
I know most of our custom arrow guys are giving us some great choices on vanes just curious what everyone likes.

I use AVIII since 10 years with Scorpyd crossbow. I have tested many fixed broadheads before finding fixed broadheads who work well with AV III : Ramcat Single Bevel, Firenock SwingBlade, Ramcat Diamonback and TOTA 1". I use now only Ramcat Diamonback and TOTA. TOTA POI is very similar than Field Point POI (1" lower at 20 yards).

In order to have accurate results you must have accurate testing

Many times over my career when trying to help an archer determine why they were having inconsistent flight from a set of arrows I found the problem was not the arrows

So i decided to suggest to everyone that i talked to about arrow accuracy to set a baseline of their skill level

And while setting the baseline it verifies the bow is properly tuned

So here is the process I believe everyone should perform

Anytime you change bows, arrows, fletching, broadheads etc

Find one arrow from the set that you know is accurate and shoot it 12 times from the distance you intend to practice

This establishes what your ability is with that setup

You can't expect a set of arrows to shoot better than you have the ability to shoot

Let's say at 40 yards you shoot 1 arrow 12 times and it's a 2 in group then you should not expect the set to shoot any tighter than 2in groups

If you shoot a 3 in group with 12 single shots or a 1 in group it's the same thing you have established a baseline of your ability

Now let's say you have a set of arrows that are shooting within you established baseline and the group opens up

The 1st thing you need to do is shoot 1 arrow 12 times to determine if it's the bow or its the arrows that's developed a problem

This process is especially effective when comparing one vane to another

You will absolutely know if 1 vane performs better than another

One additional point

If you do have a group of shafts that are consistent that you want to fletch each one with different vanes to compare vanes you should shoot each arrow at it's own target to obtain the most accurate results

But the ideal way to compare vanes is to only use 1 arrow shot 12 times then refletch and go again.

I don't think there is best vane because there are many great options. My two favorites are Tac and Heat Vanes. They are quiet, durable with low memory. Getting into the weeds I use 1° left offset because my string build is wrapped CCW.

You’re right I think that all the vanes on the market are of good quality. I’ve never had any problems with Blazers out of my Excalibur’s so I’ve never really tried much of anything else. It’s the old saying if it’s not broke why change it. Obviously there’s not many issues with vanes as I haven’t seen many people going out doing long term research on them. When I started this I also forgot that with all the brands out there some are restricted to what size vanes they’ll shoot.

Just ordered fusion Q2.
Seems they have a nice wide base for gluing.
We'll see

For the last few years I've only used blazer vanes. For a vane I pay ~0.60€/0.64$ here in Germany.
Last year I also ordered chinese vanes from Accmos. They have the same shape as the original Blazer Vanes, are a bit stiffer and 1 grain heavier. I paid less than 14€ for 100 Vanes, so less than 14 cents each. I can't tell any difference between the originals and the Chinese knock-off Vanes. The accuracy is the same.

I really tested vanes against vanes and, saw little accuracy differences. Probably because what your really testing is shaft to shaft with all other aspects being equal and repeatable. What I can see is AV2's are like a extra broadhead on the back of your arrow and, the rest that I've tried are not.
