For all those who have been waiting for years now, as of 6:00 AM this morning Governor Kathy Hochel signed into law the crossbow hunting bill. This new bill aligns crossbow hunting throughout the state with the regular archery hunting season in all zones.

It becomes effective immediately, so with whitetail hunting season due to kick off on October 1st in the southern zone crossbow hunters who have purchased their 2025 licenses can now hunt in all locations open to bow hunters.

The NY DEC should be rolling out notifications and regulations beginning September 1st. The signing of the bill made headline news in upstate New York first thing this morning.

This was a long and protracted battle in the state with certain Long Island Archery Clubs in opposition. Their misrepresentation and dishonesty surrounding crossbows finally led to their demise.

Chalk another up for honesty and ethics!

For whatever reasons unknown to me, is the state of Oregon. Only state where crossbows are 100% illegal ?

Very similar to other states with the battle for crossbows. The opposition was there own worst enemy, thus creating more support for crossbows. :)

I don’t understand why hunters of all methods can’t seem to get along. I don’t use some of the methods and tactics the guy down the street uses, but that doesn’t mean they are wrong.

This division and infighting among hunters is exactly what the anti hunting crowd wants. Why do we make so easy for them?

I am back to shooting my recurves and that is my preferred method, but I will continue to shoot and hunt with a crossbow, because it is fun, ethical and very effective.

Further, I don’t think government should be able to bar certain hunting methods on publicly funded land, considering the fact that crossbow hunters are tax payers too.

I am glad that NYS finally got with the program. It is good for hunting and huntings future.

In simplest terms our country remains extremely divided over many things. There are two basic factions. One faction is never satisfied with controlling only what goes on in their household and property. They feel the need to attempt to control what goes on in everybody else’s property.

The opposite faction only wants to pay attention to what happens in their household and their property. They oppose anyone else who attempts to interfere with what they are doing on their property.

Depending upon which of these camps you belong to it drives how you see the world and how you react to other people.

I am originally from Long Island. I’m now 64 years old. I’ve dislocated both shoulders at different times. Shooting, the compound bow became more difficult, especially while holding back, waiting for the deer to turn broadside.

A couple years ago, they allowed people with documented physical limitations, the ability to use an unmodified crossbow under the “reasonable accommodation” category. That made a huge difference for me.

Then this past February, I broke my left femur.

The compound bow purists on Long Island have been the biggest problem for years. I’m so glad this law was passed.

I’m now live in Florida. However, I do come back for several weeks in the fall to stay with family and hunt. It’s a four month long archery season. Unlimited female deer and two bucks per Hunter. And I’m hunting on private properties. The Deer epidemic here is chronic. There are no natural predators except us. many get hit by cars.

For the record, the governor has upstate family members who have been avid hunters and outdoorsmen for numerous generations. She’s not an anti-hunting advocate.

The bills that were just recently passed in the NYS Senate have taken over a decade in legislation with plenty of opposition by state legislators who opposed the legislations. Once the bill finally passes the state Senate the governor called for the bill to be brought forward and she signed it within two months from when it passed.

The problem has always been a Republican Legislator from Long Island who through his full support behind his county’s archery clubs to block and prevent crossbow legalization throughout the state. He used every illicit, underhanded tactic he could muster along with countless lies to undermine the efforts to achieve the same rights that the rest of our country have enjoyed for years.
