The following is ... the "traditional wisdom" for killing animals with an arrow:
Medium Game (Deer, Antelope): 25-41 ft/lbs.
Large Game (Elk, Black Bear, Boar): 42-65 ft/lbs.
Big Game (Cape Buffalo, Grizzly Bear): 65+ ft/lbs.

If I recall, they claim 100ke for elephants.

I seen a woman on TV nearly get complete broadside pentration with a 50lb draw vertical bow and a 450 grain arrow on a big bull at nearly 50 yards......... So just about any crossbow making over 300fps with a 450 grain arrow with a good sharp 4 blade fixed blade is going to work just fine.

Let me put it this way. There isn't a bull elk anywhere on this planet that I wouldn't have a issue dropping the string on with my excalibur 355 and 560 grain arrows going 300fps tipped with a magnus ser razor.

Any crossbow with any arrow will do the trick. Especially if you're going to be 40 yards and under you'll get real good penetration. Firstly I wouldn't go with a mechanical head. A small fixed blade three or four blade.
This elk was taken with a compound bow at 30 yards, And this was 20 years ago before all the special doodads on compounds.
My bow is probably shooting 280 tops, because I only have a 26-in draw.

I shot this cow with a KI360. 430 grain arrow shooting at 336fps. She was only at 19 yards. She was slightly Quartering away. I hit a part of the far side shoulder. The arrow sticking out about 2 inches on the far side. At the end of last year, I bought a Barnett, XP380. It is a Narrower and lighter crossbow and of course shoots faster. This season I am using a 450 grain arrow. Shooting around 372fps.
