Do you absolutely have to remove the string? I saw a video of Ted Nugent installing string silencers on a crossbow without removing the string. He used a tool to separate the strands.

it's best to remove the string, but not absolutely necessary. Generally speaking though, anytime you're serving or reserving, the string should be under about 300 pounds of tension.

 

There is no reason to put leaches in a crossbow string. They will not quiet the bow and most just tear and fly off. If you are insisted to do so, you should take pressure off the string in a press to insert them. Good luck

I don't intend to, just saw Ted do it. Personally, I don't think sound is going to matter much anyway at 300+fps under 30 yards.

I have reserved the string on my recurve, build a pipe jig with hooks and threaded bolts to tension the string. Went on line and learned how to reserve. My compound was reserved by taking off the front end and reserving by hand and using no serving tool, it has held up very well. That was before I constructed a press. Next time I will remove the string and serve it properly. If you attemp to reserve, make sure you get the proper size of the string for serving.

 

The string needs to be served under pressure (untwisted about 6 turns and stretched) - at least 200#, my last one was under about 300#. There should be a tutorial here somewhere by Boo that explains the process pretty well. Per his suggestion I used .036" Angel Majesty serving from Dan Miller.

 

I don't serve my string, my local shop does. I take the bow off the rail and take it in, then Roger presses it slightly then he reserves the string. For $5.00 I can't beat the price.

That would be it. My biggest task is keeping the serving tight when doing the end wrap/back wrap, whatever it's called. I was thinking just the other day of a tool I have in mind that I could make and make that a lot easier to do.

Yes it's very easy to do with the string still on the bow, escpecialy for those that don't have a string jig, i use a cam buckle strap and pull the cables back out of the way far enough too use your center serve tool!!!!

I'm sure you can but, somewhere in Boo's video he untwists the string about 6 turns and then puts it under tension - not sure if he indicates 200# or more. One would think that an untwisted string under pressure would make the diameter smaller during that period, allowing for a tight serve. When the twists were added back and the force reduced, that should return the string to it's original diameter and make the serving even tighter.

I saw somewhere on the Viper-X/ABB website that they tension their strings under 450# - they must do it for a reason.

I actually made mine 48" wide.I just use locking chain links or heavy duty S hooks to make up length differences if needed.I put 2x4 feet on mine and a handy tray to hold accessories.I made it 48" so I can C-clamp it to my work desk

I wish I could but my pc is screwed up and I cant post pics.It looks just like the one you posted.I put a 2x4 on each end about 14 inches long for feet. I screwed them to the bottom 2x4 from the bottom to attach them.I made a the tray out of a piece of 1/4" plywood and put 1/2"x 3/4 " edging around it to keep things from falling out Its about 5"x12". I screwed it to the bottom 2x4 in the center.I didn't add it until I found myself searching for my marker, razor blade,wrench,lighter etc lol.Boo had feet in his diagram but I dont see them in the fished product lol.I also made mine a little taller for more clearance but not much maybe 2".I didn't want it to be too weak.

 

Sounds good. When the weather warms up some and the snow melts so I can get to my pole barn where my wood working tools and lumber are I'll build one. Thanks for the info.

 

Ive shot my bow ALOT and still dont have issues with servings. I do add a drop of superglue on all serving ends before I start shooting though. Not sure if that helps but it certainly doesnt hurt. I make sure it's always waxed and I have change the string once a year whether it needed it or not. I still hang onto the old strings cause there's nothing wrong with them and theyll make good spares.

 

I put eyelets in 2 of my Bridgeport machines vices and used the x axis of one of the machines to stretch the string, made it easy to re serve.
